The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) is the state agency responsible for conservation of the state's natural resources. DFG exercises responsibility over the Commonwealth's marine and freshwater fisheries, wildlife, plants, and natural communities, and provides outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.
MassWildlife is responsible for the conservation of freshwater fish and wildlife in the Commonwealth, including endangered plants and animals. MassWildlife restores, protects, and manages land for wildlife to thrive and for people to enjoy.

The Department of Fish and Game’s Division of Fisheries and Wildlife seeks applicants for the position of MassWildlife Outdoor Education Specialist to perform the following duties:
The Outdoor Education Specialist schedules, plans, and conducts Basic Hunter Education and other courses developed and administered by the Massachusetts Division Fisheries and Wildlife Hunter Education Program. The Outdoor Education Specialist is responsible for course logistics statewide to ensure course materials and AV equipment are delivered and maintained in accordance with program needs and deadlines. The Outdoor Education Specialist assists MassWildlife’s Outreach and Education staff and volunteer instructors to conduct hunting, fishing, and shooting sports education programs, as well as assisting with curriculum design and developing educational materials and program content delivered at courses. The Outdoor Education Specialist is responsible for a wide range of education and outreach activities related to MassWildlife’s Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) efforts to increase participation in hunting, fishing, and the shooting sports. This position will provide support to MassWildlife’s pheasant program by coordinating with partners, including sporting clubs and volunteers.
Responsibilities include:
1. Collaborates with Hunter Education program staff and volunteers to arrange, organize, schedule, and participate in Hunter Education courses.
2. Responsible for Hunter Education program course logistics. Tracks the status of individual courses and works with volunteer instructors to ensure course material and AV equipment needs and deadlines are met. Ensures course materials and AV equipment are returned in a timely manner.
3. Maintains Hunter Education program inventory ensuring all is in good working order. Ensures a sufficient supply of program materials and equipment are available for courses. Makes recommendations to Hunter Education program staff concerning the purchase of materials.
4. Supports the implementation of MassWildlife’s pheasant program, including coordinating with partnering sporting clubs on the club pheasant program and Youth Pheasant program.
5. Supports MassWildlife’s R3 efforts by planning and conducting programs including but not limited to the Learn to Hunt Program, Becoming an Outdoorswoman Program, Mentored Youth Pheasant and Turkey Hunting Programs, Angler Education Program, and National Archery in the Schools Program.
6. Provides logistical support to schedule instructor-led courses and ensure course materials and equipment are provided to volunteers of hunting, fishing, and shooting sports programs.
7. Develops written content and course materials and assists with the development of instructional videos to support MassWildlife’s education programs.
8. Develops and grows relationships with external partners in a diversity of communities across the Commonwealth. Collaborates with partners on R3 programs and initiatives to promote hunting, fishing, and shooting sports.
9. Assists with event management by registering students for courses, evaluating course data, and collecting and inputting student feedback forms.
10. Assists with the promotion of MassWildlife programs, services, products, and events that engage new and existing audiences and promote hunting, fishing, and shooting sports.
11. Represents MassWildlife at events, including remote and in-person seminars, webinars, and meetings, as needed.
12. Delivers exceptional customer service when answering public inquiries received in-person and through email and phone calls.
13. Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications at Hire:
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB
I. A Bachelor's or higher degree with a major in wildlife management, wildlife biology or forestry may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of two years of education for one year of experience.*
- Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
