As a Biological Science Assistant (Bird Bander) at the Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area in La Grande, Oregon, you will capture and band Mourning Doves, duck and goose species, as well as collect biological data. This information is used to monitor movements and record populations information for these species. Duties include:
  • Use swim/walk in style traps to capture migrant avian species including waterfowl and mourning dove for the purpose of banding
  • Hand capture Canada Geese and Sandhill cranes for banding
  • Site selection and preparation for trapping including clearing vegetation, exposing bare dirt, and pre baiting
  • Inventory trapping and banding equipment
  • Maintenance of trapping and banding equipment as well as vehicles
  • Record biological information from captured birds

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
  • Wildlife capture experience
  • Bird banding experience
  • Experience with waterfowl trap construction
  • Experience collecting and recording field data
  • Knowledge of Oregon waterbirds
  • Anyone who has or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences.
