ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST

Under the supervision of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisor), the incumbent will coordinate the collection, compilation, and analysis of water quality data for waterbodies throughout the state to determine habitat suitability for invasive mussels, including golden, quagga, and zebra mussels. The incumbent will serve as the lead for statewide water quality data collection, data entry, and data management; assist with coordinating and providing scientific, planning, and logistic support to statewide early-detection monitoring for invasive mussels; and conduct surveys for the presence of invasive mussels and other aquatic invasive species. The incumbent will develop and maintain a water quality database and synthesis products such as summary tables and GIS maps. The incumbent will also participate in the tracking, coordination, and response to watercraft movement and quarantine notices and assist with the inspection and decontamination of watercraft as needed. This position works closely with regional and Program staff, external agency staff, and the public.


This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

In order to be eligible for this position, you must either be transfer eligible or take and pass the following exam.

Class Title: Environmental Scientist/Exam Bulletin

This position is a 12-month Limited Term (LT) and may be extended up to 24 months or become permanent.

If you currently have permanent status in your position and have passed probation, you have mandatory reinstatement rights into your former position at the end of this LT appointment. If you have not had prior permanent or probationary civil service status, you will be separated from state service.

During this 12-month Limited Term assignment, you will receive full health, dental, and vision benefits! You will also earn State Service and accrue monthly leave credits.

Working Conditions

Ability to use a computer several hours a day. Involves desk work most of the time but may involve walking, standing, and lifting and carrying packages or other objects for brief periods. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Occasional travel and field work will be required.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California driver's license and be available to travel for occasional day and overnight trips. Must be able to drive several hours to field sites to conduct occasional field work in variable weather conditions. Must be able to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes and be able to boat and kayak on large bodies of water.

This position requires the possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration.

The selected candidate, will be required to provide a copy of your Degree/Official Transcripts to Human Resources.
