What are the responsibilities and job description for the FISH AND WILDLIFE SCIENTIFIC AID position at Department of Fish and Wildlife?

The Department of Fish and Wildlife's South Coast Region is seeking motivated individuals to work as a Scientific Aid out of the San Diego office. The temporary field position is an excellent way for those who have recently graduated college with biological degrees to work in a wide variety of resource assessment activities, including oversee and monitor numerous remote camera stations throughout eastern San Diego County, field surveys for non-native plant and animal species, habitat evaluations and management, assist professional staff in a wide variety of resource assessment surveys for plant and animal species of concern to the Department. Participate as a field crew member for avian and aquatic surveys, and other suites of species as appropriate, conduct literature searches, data collection and entry, and report writing in coastal southern California. We are looking for candidates that have solid writing skills and knowledge of ecological principles, species identification, and data management. Many of the people who have taken these positions have gained enough experience to compete for permanent jobs in the government and private sectors.
The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions
The office location is at the San Diego Regional office. Approx. 40% work is performed in an office and 60% in the field. This position requires the incumbent to perform field work that may include carrying a 40 lb. backpack walking in streams over slippery and uneven terrain; hiking in areas with moderate slopes, unpaved surfaces and undeveloped roads; to conduct field work for long hours under a variety of climatic conditions; operate 4WD vehicles on public and rural roadways and in remote areas on extremely rough unimproved roads; and travel throughout the South Coast Region to conduct field work and/or attend meetings.
