Under the supervision of the Inland Fisheries Program’s Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory), the incumbent will assist with fish and wildlife surveys in the South Coast Region, for the purpose of assisting with resource management. The incumbent will also assist in collecting, managing, and analyzing stream, watershed, and biological data related to the South Coast Region's native fisheries. This position is based out of Seal Beach, while most of the duties are performed in Los Angeles County.

The Fish and Wildlife Scientific Aid classification is a non-testing classification.

Working Conditions

The position will be based in Seal Beach Field Office. The incumbent will routinely need to conduct field work in wet and dry conditions carrying bulky items throughout the region’s watersheds, may need to carry up to 40 lbs. in uneven terrain in inclement weather or excessive heat, may need to work irregular hours including some nights or weekends, and some overnight travel may be necessary.

Special Requirements

Physical strength and agility; ability to swim 50 yards and stay afloat at least five minutes; and ability to carry 40 pounds over rough terrain.

    Statement of Qualification and Cover Letter must be no more than two pages in length, size 12 point Arial font. Statement of Qualifications: 1. Describe your experience sampling fish or wildlife and your experience outdoors (camping, hiking, fishing, backpacking, etc.). 2. Describe your experience writing reports, summarizing and analyzing data, and include the name of any data management and the statistical tools you are familiar with.

    A Cover Letter is required and must be submitted along with your STD 678 application. Failure to include a Cover Letter will result in an incomplete application submission.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Familiarity with the fundamentals of fisheries management and ecology. Interest in hiking, backpacking, and snorkeling.
