Darrah Springs Hatchery is seeking a dedicated, career-oriented individual to oversee the operation of a large-scale trout production facility. As the Fish Hatchery Manager I, you will manage a team of 7 permanent employees and 2 seasonal workers, ensuring the efficient daily operations of the hatchery.
In this role, you’ll be responsible for supervising staff performance, conducting evaluations, and taking appropriate action, including disciplinary measures when needed. You will create work schedules, coordinate stocking and fishing events, and monitor ongoing projects related to grounds maintenance, fish culture, rearing, stocking, water quality, data collection, and biosecurity programs.
Additionally, you will oversee the maintenance and repair of vehicles, equipment, and facilities, ensuring the hatchery operates at its best. Promoting a culture of safety and providing training opportunities for staff will also be a key aspect of your responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Must wear a prescribed uniform when engaging with the public, conducting fieldwork, in the office and on-site visits. Ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day. Involves sitting, standing, walking, and manual labor. Working in extreme weather conditions of heat and occasionally snow. Ability to work in remote locations. This position may require moderate day travel, and occasional overnight travel up to 5 days based on business need. Work weekends, holidays, and unusual hours as assigned, required or necessary in an emergency to keep live fish product alive. Possession of a valid Driver’s License is required to operate State vehicles. Periodic use of respirators and required to participate in the Department’s respirator protection program; and other required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) certifications.
Landlord responsibilities for state owned housing on site. State Owned housing is available; residency and standby duties are currently required.

Special Requirements

Special Physical Characteristics: Ability to swim at least 50 yards and to stay afloat at least five minutes and to lift 40 pounds.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Ability to apply principles and practices for hatchery operations, fish culture practices, leadership of staff, interagency cooperation and act as hatchery representative at meetings. Demonstrated ability to work independently, be open-minded, adapt to staff needs, and handle situations with tact.
Experience operating various equipment such as forklifts, backhoes, fish pumps, lawn mowers, and planting vehicles.
Experience coordinating on-site and off-site stocking and projects.
Proficiency with computer programs like Word, Excel, AquaManager, and Outlook is expected for data management and communication.
Additional desired qualifications include being a Certified Forklift Operator or Trainer, holding a Class A Driver’s License for transporting fish and equipment, and maintaining Respirator Certification to meet safety standards.
