As a Natural Resource Specialist 3 – Quantitative Marine Ecologist based in Newport, Oregon, your primary responsibilities will include conducting analyses and preparing reports, as well as managing projects and fostering collaborations with external partners. This includes engaging with state and federal scientists, non-agency researchers, community members, commercial and recreational fishermen, and federally recognized Tribes to facilitate joint research initiatives. Duties include:
  • Lead the analysis of marine reserves monitoring data in support of adaptive management and application to nearshore management issues.
  • Determine research design
  • Lead and participate in data collection including at sea research
  • Produce reports and publications
  • Communicate marine reserves science and research results with peers, the public and decision makers

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Minimum Qualifications
Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND a Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, OR three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.
Equivalency Notes:
  • A Master's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master's degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience.
  • A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.
Desired Attributes
  • Experience analyzing marine ecological and oceanographic data
  • Experience identifying ecological patterns and drivers of environmental change in marine ecosystems
  • Experience working in marine environments and able to work at-sea
  • Experience with ArcGIS including creating and editing shapefiles, working with bathymetric raster data, and using ArcGIS to formulate survey designs
  • Experience building research collaborations with multiple types of stakeholders such as agency scientists, university researchers, conservation groups, commercial and recreational fishermen, Tribes and community groups.
  • Experience with Microsoft Access including database design, data entry and export, form creation and creating queries
  • Experience conducting univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of biological or natural resource data. Proficiency with multivariate analyses and statistical packages/programming (R, PRIMER, etc.)
  • Experience writing reports and publications

  • The salary listed is the non-PERS qualifying salary range. If the successful candidate is PERS qualifying, the salary range will reflect an additional 6.95%.
