Job Duties
The Department of Forensic Science has experienced record growth and is currently in construction of a new state of the art facility in Hanover County. The Central Laboratory, Director’s Office, Administrative Offices, and the Office of the Medical Examiner, currently located in Richmond, will move to the new facility when it is completed. The transition is anticipated for First Quarter 2026.
The Department of Forensic Science (DFS) is seeking an Office Manager to provide administrative support to the Laboratory Director in our Central Laboratory, located in Richmond, VA. This position will plan, coordinate and direct administrative support activities, receive and key subpoenas, and supervise clerical staff. The ideal candidate will be professional, well organized, able to set priorities, multi-task, maintain a positive attitude and have a high level of integrity.
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable work experience in coordinating administrative support operations, tracking workflow and resolving issues, and providing guidance and consultation to management
- Extensive working knowledge and demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office 365, to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
- Extensive working knowledge maintaining a large volume of files
- Excellent customer service skills exhibited by an ability to maintain effective and congenial working relationships with variety of people
- Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and spelling; ability to proofread, type neatly and accurately; general knowledge of filing systems; good basic math skills, ability to write with clarity, excellent oral and written communication skills
Additional Considerations
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, review and direct the work of others
- Working knowledge of state personnel practices, administration laws, rules and regulations
- Work experience using Ideagen document management system
- Working knowledge of State fiscal and procurement rules and regulations
- Work experience providing administrative/clerical work in a Forensic Science Laboratory

Special Requirements
Background Investigation: Selected candidate(s) must successfully pass a background investigation to include a fingerprint-based criminal history check. Selected candidate(s) must provide a DNA sample via a buccal swab (saliva sample) and successfully pass a drug test. Reference checks will be conducted to include contact with current and previous supervisors.
