Job Duties
The English Language (EL) teacher is responsible for supporting the district’s EL program initiatives by providing instruction and case management to EL students. This person will: create lessons; collaboratively plan, coach, and provide feedback to general education teachers; conduct professional development; administer State and local assessments to measure student academic progress, achievement, and growth; and collaborate with administrators, as well as provide guidance and expertise in the best practices for successful language acquisition, specifically in the four language domain areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The EL teacher complies with standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program requirements.
The EL Teacher reports directly to the Principal.
As a condition of employment, selected candidate must successfully complete the VA Department of Juvenile Justice's Basic Skills and Handle with Care training located in Hanover, Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher. Possess a current Teaching License issued by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) or able to obtain a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsed in English as a Second Language PreK-12. Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment to successfully perform the work. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and a patient and resilient personality. Knowledgeable about meets important timelines imposed by regulation. Competent in the most current version of WIDA’s Access for ELLs assessment, how to interpret scores, develop lessons, and guide programming. Skills in developing, implementing, and monitoring EL plans. • An understanding of entrance, exit, monitoring status and required State reporting categories. Ability to supervise students, facilitate appropriate classroom management, and maintain accurate records. Ability to effectively collaborate with students, parents, teachers, staff, and other stakeholders to improve outcomes for EL students.
Additional Considerations
Experience teaching English Language (EL) students in a secondary education setting. Experience teaching at-risk youth. Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands. Regular and predicable attendance is expected.
