Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

The role of the Reentry Advocate is to link youth returning from juvenile correctional centers to the services and resources in the community. The Regional Reentry Specialist will link youth returning from Juvenile Correctional Centers to services and resources in the community (Eastern Region: Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg). Assist ex-offenders with attaining reentry goals to become gainfully employed and resilient/responsible members of the community. This position will require extensive travel with some overnight stays and frequent contact with community partners in the Eastern region.

This role will be based in the Eastern Region: Suffolk, Newport News, Hampton, and Williamsburg. This role will also assist ex-offenders to attain reentry goals, become gainfully employed and become resilient, responsible members of the community.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Skilled in effective oral and written communication and listening.
  • Skilled in using basic computer software programs and databases packages as organizational tools, preparing reports and data entry.
  • Ability to establish partnerships with community stakeholders to meet reentry goals.
  • Ability to identify personality traits, attitudes and behaviors, knowledge, and technical skills essential for the success of re-entry of the residents.
  • Ability to assess employability skills and life skills.
  • Ability to provide career, college, and vocational planning.
  • Ability to identify societal and economic trends that may affect the future employment of residents.
  • Ability to identify services specific to the region to meet reentry goals.
  • Possess good effective presentation skills.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable training and/or experience in criminal justice, public administration, human services or other relevant field.
  • Progressive experience in a juvenile correctional facility, alternative school environment, or alternative correctional setting.
