About the Agency:

The Virginia Department of Military Affairs is a Commonwealth of Virginia state agency that provides professional and responsive support functions to the Adjutant General of Virginia, the Virginia National Guard, the Virginia Air Guard, and the Virginia Defense Force in order to ensure their ability to support and defend the United States and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Purpose of Position:

To conduct firing desk operations and oversee the safety and conduct of the Range Training Complex to include required training, systems and network access, regulatory & policy knowledge, unit training management, and risk management. This position is part-time and limited to an average of 29 hours per week, not to exceed 1500 hours per year from May 1 - April 30. This position is ineligible for State benefits.

Job Duties:

Conduct safety and security inspections on installation training;

Serve as the central point for organization and coordination of all activities conducted within the installation;

Participate as a member of the installation range accident investigation team as required;

Performs other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Comprehensive knowledge of range operations principles, practices and requirements, based on extensive practical experience in the field and as supplemented by training classes, necessary to plan, coordinate/operate, inspect, identify, and eliminate hazardous conditions arising from training operations and operations of a wide variety of weapons and ammunition on the Fort Barfoot range complex;

Knowledge of standard range safety danger zones and classification for ammunition and explosives to minimize the potential for causing loss of life and property;

Ability to interpret range safety danger zone diagrams, range elevation charts, firing tables, ricochet and ballistic characteristics and other data necessary to identify and establish hazardous areas and ranges;

Ability to accurately assess the overall range situation and develop a mental picture of downrange activities and their relative position for effective coordination;

Knowledge of risk assessment and other analytical techniques sufficient to investigate mishaps involving a variety of munitions and test operations;

Comprehensive knowledge of range operations used in interfacing the total range complex operations function of high-risk training exercises to minimize conflicts and exposure to personnel and equipment;

Knowledge of safety and occupational health regulations, standards, policies and procedures pertaining to range operations;

Knowledge of military tactical training, qualification requirements, airborne and sling load operations, safety of live fire exercises, airspace usage, to approve and schedule training exercises;

Ability to operate a computer and use Microsoft Office;

Must be able to travel for work as needed;

Must have a valid Virginia Driver's License with an acceptable driving record;

Verbal and written communication skills required;

Ability to multitask and prioritize tasks based on safety;

Must be able to work nights and weekends on a regular basis.


Additional Considerations

Level II Range Safety Course/Training preferred.

Must successfully complete and pass the Level II Range Safety Course/Training within one year of employment.

Must obtain a Common Access Card (CAC).
