This position is in the District of Columbia Government (District), Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Recreation Services Administration, and Aquatics Facilities. The incumbent serves as a Recreation Specialist.
Duties and Responsibilities
Plans and coordinates the details of recurring and non-recurring activities, special events, and joint community undertakings to make maximum use of facilities, services, and other resources. Schedules and publicizes aquatic activities, ensuring maximum effectiveness in at1nlcting and motivating participants and in providing the wildest possible range of activities in teams of community interests and needs. Arranges supplies and services needed to accomplish scheduled activities. Accounts for all funds involved and makes recommendations for improvements in funding and other support services.
Solicits volunteers and other services for activities, which could not be scheduled without such assistance. Interviews and selects volunteers and provides them with the required orientation, training, and management Coordinates will volunteer activities. Provides guidance and leadership to the various activities and participants. modifying, adapting. expanding. or otherwise, change plans and procedures for such activities. Instructs participants in those activities for which the incumbent has technical expertise. Continuously evaluates the effectiveness of ongoing activities from the standpoint of participant response, and resources. unforeseen development and program objectives.
Qualifications and Education
A degree with a major study in general recreation, or on to the appropriate fields of recreation such as outdoor recreation; recreation and parks leadership; wild land recreation management; natural resources recreation; youth recreation; public, urban or community recreation; special populations recreation (e.g., senior citizens, institutional, etc.); or physical education.

Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, or its non-District equivalent. Experience that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and an International Lifeguard Training Program (ILTP) certification.
Working Conditions/Environment
Aquatic recreation activities involve everyday risks or discomforts, which require normal safety precautions.
