FORESTRY AIDE – INLAND EMPIRE DISTRICT / NATURAL RESOURCES

The reporting location for this position is Lake Perris State Recreation Area, 17801 Lake Perris Dr. Perris, CA 92571. This position will work under the District’s Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).

The Inland Empire District consists of Lake Perris State Recreation Area, Chino Hills State Park, California Citrus State Historic Park, Mount San Jacinto State Park, Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, Providence Mountain State Park, San Timoteo Canyon State Park, and Wildwood Canyon State Park. The Natural Resources of all parks listed are managed by a Senior Environmental Scientist and/or Environmental Scientists within the Natural Resources Program.

The Forestry Aide will work to support forest health, fuel reduction projects and other natural resource projects as needed. A primary duty will be goldspotted oak borer surveys, which consist of host plant inspections to determine presence/absence, distribution, and infestation status. In addition, primary focus of the position will be to support development and implementation of forest health and fuel reduction projects, which may include leading work crews (e.g., DPR staff, Cal Fire Crews and California Conservation Corps), marking trees for felling, mapping of project plots, conducting fire affects monitoring and assisting with prescribed burn preparations and implementation. The Forestry Aide will collect and input data with Esri mobile apps (e.g., Field Maps, Survey123) or similar GPS devices, and manage data within databases such as ArcGIS Online and Microsoft Excel. The Forestry Aide may also assist with reports and preparation for other administrative tasks which may include prescribed fire plans, environmental review, habitat restoration plans and processing collecting permits to meet District goals. The Forestry Aide may also assist with invasive plant mapping, removal, and will become trained to treat exotic species using a variety of treatments including herbicide application under supervision of a Qualified Applicator. The Forestry Aide may also assist with restoration, associated site prep and plant nursery maintenance.

This position may work up to 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months. This position is designated as not telework eligible.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) 599.961, this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR 599.962.

Working Conditions

Work involves moderate exposure to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures (over 100 degrees in the summertime and near freezing in the winter months), dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions. Outdoor work is common. Typical work activities involve frequent and prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, and stooping.

Current basic fire fighter certification (FF Type II), GPS/GIS, chain saw use and tree felling experience are a plus.
