Physical Fitness Training Instructor (Public Safety Training Specialist 1)
This recruitment is for multiple, limited-duration, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE), this position is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.

What you will be doing:
This position is part of the Survival Skills section within the Training Division, with a primary focus on the Health and Fitness program. This program encompasses physical fitness training, the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT), disease awareness, nutrition classes. Additionally, this role may involve supporting programs related to Defensive Tactics, Use of Force scenarios, Firearms, and other skill-based training.
You will be responsible for instructing classes, utilizing strong communication and technical skills to deliver clear, effective presentations while maintaining control of the classroom environment. You will also interact effectively with both internal and external agency personnel.
Your duties will include facilitating pre-designed coursework and activities, adapting your teaching methods to the context of public safety and the training curriculum. You will coach and assess participants on their progress toward achieving learning objectives and provide both verbal and written feedback to training coordinators regarding participant performance, course content, materials, and activities.
You will provide expertise in Physical Fitness Training, ORPAT, Fitness and Nutrition, and Disease Awareness and Prevention. Additionally, you will demonstrate the proper and safe use of training equipment, including weightlifting gear, audio-visual equipment, and gym maintenance tools.

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. - Instructors who live more than 75 miles from the Academy and teach more than one day per week will be reimbursed for mileage for one round trip in addition to lodging and meal expenses. Exceptions may be authorized with prior supervisory approval.
Minimum Qualifications:
Three (3) years of professional-level experience related to the instructional assignment and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training.

- Experience as an athletic coach or an educational teacher/ instructor.
- A high level of physical fitness to effectively demonstrate and teach the skills you will be instructing.
- Current and ongoing participation in Public Safety Skills training.
- Experience instructing large groups.
- High level of physical fitness to properly perform the skills you will be instructing.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to those who have qualifications/skills listed below.
- Certification from a recognized accrediting body such as NSCA, CSCCa, USA Weightlifting, or another accredited certifying body.
- Degree in any of the following, preferred: Exercise Physiology, Exercise Science, Biomechanics, Strength & Conditioning, Nutrition, other related fields of study.
- Previous athletic experience at the collegiate level or higher is a plus.
Experience in the area of instruction must have been acquired within the last five (5) years.
