Role Player – Multiple Part Time Positions Available
This recruitment is for multiple, temporary, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE) and is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.
Pay: $19.77 / hour (Non-PERS contributing or "base pay") $21.05 / hour (PERS contributing)
This position has no guarantee of hours. The hours worked depend on DPSST's needs and the incumbent's schedule.
Schedule: Typical business hours for scheduling are Monday – Friday. 7:00 am – 5:00 pm (with an hour lunch), hours are dependent on academy needs.
Schedule is not set, hours will vary based on academy needs, and incumbent’s scheduled availability.
Position Duration: The position assignment is limited to a six (6) month period or hour limit. Candidates who consistently demonstrate the requested skills/ desired attributes may extend their assignment for another six (6) month period.
Time to Fill Timeline: In person interviews will be held the first week of April, there is no alternative date for interviews or virtual options available.
What is a Role Player & What You Will Be Doing:
Role playing in DPSST training involves participants assuming roles in structured scenarios with specific guidelines and objectives to help public safety professionals develop critical skills. The training simulates real-life situations officers face, ensuring they are well-prepared when they graduate. These exercises are physically demanding, requiring role players to stand for long periods, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and engage in physical confrontations or attempts to evade capture. Role players may also be handcuffed or required to run during scenarios.

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) sets professional standards and provides training for law enforcement, corrections, parole, probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. Must be at least 18 years of age or older at the time of hire.

  • Arrive to work on time and ready to actively participate.

Preferred Qualification:
Preference may be given to those with a valid Driver’s License.
Additional Requirements:
Successful candidates for this position will be subject to a computerized criminal history check. Adverse background information will be reviewed and could result in withdrawal of a conditional job offer or termination of employment.
