The Department of State Hospitals-Atascadero is a secure public sector hospital providing inpatient forensic services for mentally ill adult males who are court committed throughout the State of California.
Psychiatric Technician:
- Helps to create a clean, safe and therapeutic environment for patients or inmates
- Apply mental health principles and relationship security with patients or inmates
- Supervise patient activities
- Performs custody tasks including supervision of patient activities
- Shakedown, i.e., searching for drugs, contraband, weapons and inspecting facilities to identify security breaches that could lead to the escape of a patient or inmate
- Observing and intervening in patient behavior that may injure people, damage property or signal impending escape attempts
- Applies and demonstrates knowledge of correct methods in the prevention and management of assaultive behavior (PMAB), that includes patient containment, heavy lifting (over 50 pounds), applying restraints, and responding to emergency situations throughout the hospital
- Performs nursing procedures such as administering mediations including oral medications and hypodermic injection, observing patients or inmates physical condition and behavior and reporting significant changes to a shift supervisor, unit supervisor or physician and recoding nursing notes, in the patients or inmate record
- CPR, and following infection control procedures
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid CA license to practice as a Psychiatric Technician issued by the BVNPT.*
Potential onsite housing for Permanent/Full-Time Staff: This if offered to employees who will be starting a permanent, full-time position with us and relocating. These are studio and dormitory style housing and based on availability. This allows staff to find something more permanent locally. Housing is on a 5-month temporary lease at a reduced rate (estimated $500/monthly), for confirmed pricing contact the housing coordinator listed on the brochure. Housing is only for employees; no other persons or pets are allowed. Located onsite of hospital grounds and withing 5-10 minutes walking distance to front of hospital lobby.
