About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire an Applicant Background Examiner in our Human Resources Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will initiate, perform, and document the initial stage of the sworn and civilian applicant backgrounds by collecting, evaluating, interpreting, and analyzing various data streams including consumer reporting agency information, public records, and social media accounts of applicants; prepare and maintain a variety of correspondence, forms, logs, and confidential reports and provide field support; conduct desktop-based social media and social networking profile searches; perform a variety of administrative duties to maintain organization and records management for the Background Unit; provide administrative procedural and technical training and support in compliance with policies and regulations to office and field to employees of the Background Investigations Unit and across the Agency as needed; provide customer service to inquiries from applicants by telephone and e-mail; and participate in process change and improvement initiatives for the Background Investigations Unit.

Minimum Qualifications
- Working knowledge of the general rules and regulations relevant to the review, collection, and protection of public and private information; of analysis and research techniques and methodologies; and of standard office practices, procedures, equipment, and office support techniques.
- Skill in operating computers and using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word); and in using web-based data collection systems to extract and manipulate data.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze, apply, and interpret human resources policies, procedures, and guidelines; to collect, analyze, interpret, summarize and communicate information orally and in writing in English; to research and analyze data; to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and discretion; to understand and verify the validity and reliability of information from a variety of sources; to develop analytical assessments from diverse datasets and recognize contradictory and/or incomplete information; to prepare accurate reports from file sources; to accurately maintain a variety of files, logs, and office records; to compose correspondence and documentation using proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling; to perform and organize work independently; to collect and assemble information; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees, consumer and government agencies, law enforcement and legal representatives, and the general public.
- Experience in office operations, data collection, and information analysis required.
- Must be eligible to become VCIN certified, which requires either U.S. citizenship or a lawful permanent resident of the United States and eligible for naturalization.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in business administration, criminal justice, human resources, or a related field preferred.
