Job Duties

About the Position:
The Virginia State Police (VSP) is seeking to hire a Benefits Assistant in our Human Resources Division at our Administrative Headquarters in North Chesterfield, Virginia. The successful candidate will create electronic files for Workers’ Compensation (WC) claims; serve as the primary data entry staff member responsible for keying data into the Cardinal Human Capital Management (HCM) system for new enrollments and qualifying mid-year events (QMEs); respond to questions about forms, documentation, and timelines; provide support for employees during open enrollment; administer the Parental Leave Program for those employees not transitioning from short-term disability; discuss eligibility and requirements with employees and supervisors; determine eligibility and sends eligibility notices; process awards and coordinates with vendors; maintain tracking spreadsheet for awards ordered and received; open and process mail for the Benefits Team; send separation packets to classified Agency employees (non-retirees) who terminate State employment; complete required forms and memos for retirees’ firearms transactions; and provide backup and assistance for other members of Benefits Team

Minimum Qualifications

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; and proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality and discretion; to provide strong customer service orientation; to communicate effectively in oral and written form; time management; to conduct research and solve problems; to manage competing priorities; to communicate in English and work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization and outside stakeholders; to analyze complex issues and make recommendations; to interpret and apply policies and procedures; to explain benefits programs to employees and others; and to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license required.
  • Must be able to travel periodically throughout Virginia.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.


Additional Considerations

  • Experience in benefits administration preferred.
  • Knowledge of employee benefits administration and programs and applicable state and/or federal regulations, policies, and/or procedures preferred.
