Under general direction of a Deputy Chief Counsel, the Assistant Chief Counsel is responsible for managing a group of attorneys and paralegals involved in a variety of litigation activities, which includes leading a litigation team, and may include actively litigating cases.The Assistant Chief Counsel works in planning, organizing, directing, practicing, coordinating, and reviewing the work of a major legal section of a small legal office. Trial experience as lead counsel is preferred.Additional responsibilities of the Assistant Chief Counsel include acting as legal advisor to top management; preparing legislation and representing the Department before the Legislature; formulating legal policy; and participating as a member of top management in the development and implementation of department policy and procedures.The position is located in our Fresno Legal Office. The Caltrans Legal Division is comprised of five offices statewide including its Sacramento office near the State Capitol, Oakland, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Fresno.The Caltrans Legal Division Fresno Legal Office is a public entity law office which offers a supportive and challenging work environment where you will be given substantial responsibility at an early stage of your career. Olive Avenue, Fresno, Fresno County.While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Will have to perform work duties in different court rooms throughout the state and therefore, this position does require travel.This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
