Job Description

***In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the Transportation Specialist title, or must have taken, passed, and be reachable on the Open Competitive list
civil service list for Transportation Specialist, exam # 3027, or be eligible under the 55a program.***



NYC DOT Division of Traffic Operations is seeking an experienced and motivated candidate to serve as a Transportation Specialist (Level 3) in the Division’s APS program. The selected candidate will report directly to the Executive Director of Signals and Street Lighting and be involved in the oversight of engineering design consultants for the preparation, submittal, review, and approval of traffic signal drawings related to the installation of APS at signalized intersections. The Candidate will supervise a small team of engineers/college aides as well as lead and assign work to engineering design consultants and provide technical guidance and training for such staff involved in the APS program. Additional responsibilities include representing the Division at field construction meetings, discussing field issues with contractors, engineering design consultants, in-house electrician forces, and taking the lead on making technical decisions and developing solutions to field condition issues. Direct engineering design consultants to update APS design drawings based on field changes and review/approve such drawings. Advise managerial staff on evolving APS policies/design procedures and in-house operational issues with the APS program. Review and analyze installation progress reports and present such data and recommendations on how to increase design efficiencies and signal design work order production. Attend in-office design meetings with engineering design consultants, contractors, and all affiliated NYC agencies to ensure projects follow NYCDOT traffic signal drawing standards/specifications. Review traffic signal construction contracts, develop estimates of quantities, review change order requests and prepare the adjustment of items/quantities to reflect field changes.

  • Should be detailed-oriented and accurate can work both independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment, be organized and capable of multi-tasking, have excellent verbal and strong writing/oral communications skills.
  • Should also have strong computer knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.


This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program agreed to between the City and DC37.

Minimum Qualifications


1. A master's degree in transportation engineering, mathematics, urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, urban studies, or related physical and social science fields; or

2. A baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college and one year of full-time satisfactory experience performing technical work on roadway transportation and traffic studies and area-wide traffic programs; or

3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or

4. An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above; or

5. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and six years of full-time satisfactory experience as described in "2" above.

SPECIAL NOTE:

In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements above:

To be assigned to Assignment Level II, the candidate must have an additional year of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.

To be assigned to Assignment Level III, the candidate must have an additional two years of experience as described in the "Qualification Requirements" listed under "2" above.
