The role:

In this role, you will be a member of the construction project management crew while assisting the resident engineer in administering construction contracts and support the development of projects. You will be responsible for construction inspection and documentation of multiple complex projects. Area 1 of Region 2 within the Oregon Department of Transportation extends from the Columbia estuary to approximately Neskowin along US101 and up the Columbia River to Scappoose. This expansive area allows for a wide variety of transportation projects. Project such as bridge replacements, roadway preservation, intersection safety improvements and ADA upgrades modernize and increase safety for all residents and visitors of Oregon visiting the beautiful Oregon Coast. Stream channel restoration projects provide for improved salmon spawning habitat increasing the viability of our beautiful and natural habitat. All ODOT projects are rewarding as they give back to our local communities and the many visitors who choose to recreate and spend time among the many natural wonders of the Oregon Coast.

A day in the life:
  • Coordinate inspection activities on multiple projects and assist resident engineer with scheduling crew work effectively.
  • Train and mentor inspectors, survey technicians, interns and others.
  • Verify work is accurate and help correct deficiencies.
  • Monitor contractor’s processes, procedures and progress.
  • Work with impacted local jurisdictions, property owners and businesses for resolution of project issues.
  • Perform construction inspection as needed.
  • Participate in project plan development reviews including specifications and take off calculations.
  • Schedule, attend and communicate final inspection results on projects.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with project safety procedures and methods as identified in ODOT standard specifications, ODOT policy and safety standards and procedures.
  • May require long hours, differing shifts, overnight travel and call outs for emergencies.
  • May require work with dissatisfied contractors and the public.
  • Exposure to traffic and construction equipment, uneven surfaces and adverse weather conditions including storms, snow, ice and rain.

Minimum qualifications:
Five (5) years of civil or transportation-related engineering or surveying experience. One (1) year of this experience must have been independently planning and completing assignments.
OR
A bachelor's degree in civil engineering, surveying or transportation-related engineering AND two (2) years of civil or transportation-related engineering or surveying experience.
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special qualifications:
Driving is an essential function of this position. You must have a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s). Your license does not have to be issued in Oregon to be considered.

  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles, construction methods and contract administration procedures.
  • Experience motivating, training, coaching, developing and directing work of crew members.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and mediation skills and the ability to remain calm in adverse situations.
  • Significant experience performing project development plan and specification review.
  • The ability to soundly apply advanced engineering judgment and engineering principles in highly complex situations.
