The Office of Inspector General (OIG) works within the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to prevent or stop waste, fraud, and abuse in departmental programs. The OIG also consults with Congress about programs in progress and proposed new laws and regulations. The OIG carries out its mission by issuing audit reports, evaluations, and management advisories with findings and recommendations to improve program delivery and performance.
To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the BASIC REQUIREMENTS and SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.
Basic Requirements for Performance Auditors
Degree : Auditing; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, public administration, or accounting.
Combination of education and experience : At least 4 years of experience in Performance Auditing, or an equivalent combination of performance auditing experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional auditing knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following :
- A certificate as a Certified Internal Auditor or a Certified Public Accountant, obtained through written examination;
- Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial coursework in auditing or accounting, e.g., 15 semester hours.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
GS-14 :
To qualify, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equal or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as :
Experience conducting performance audits to determine economy, efficiency, effectiveness, or compliance with Generally Accepted Auditing Standards; modifying objectives, work plans, guidelines, scope, methods, staff requirements, and time schedules to meet project needs; conducting interviews, briefings, and exit conferences to acquire / exchange information or facts needed to complete audit assignments or influence acceptance of audit findings; presenting findings and recommendations to management officials; designing and conducting comprehensive management studies; preparing long-range and short-range planning guidance; conducting comprehensive studies requiring the application of advanced analytical and statistical methods and techniques; and preparing and / or reviewing written reports, work papers, and other documents to appropriately document audit findings and results.
