What are the responsibilities and job description for the TRANSPORTATION SURVEYOR PARTY CHIEF (CALTRANS) position at Department of Transportation?
Plans and organizes the work of a field survey party. As a TSPC, he/she is responsible for the work methods and safety practices of the survey party. It is the TSPC's responsibility to ensure that all safety rules and procedures are followed and that all work is performed in a safe manner and oversees tailgate safety meetings every 10 working days. Incumbent must thoroughly understand the role of the TSPC in the Survey Branch, the Office of Right of Way and Land Surveys, the Division of Project Delivery and the Department as a whole. Incumbent must understand the importance of clear communication with both internal and external customers. Exercises "responsible charge" of the crew's survey work as defined in the Land Surveyors Act.
Supervises and directs survey party personnel in all aspects of the field surveying activities that include Design, Construction, Control and Right of Way Surveys. Reviews and approves crew member decisions prior to implementation, including consideration of alternatives, whenever land surveying decisions are made which could affect the health, safety and welfare of Department employees and the public. Ensures staff are working in a safe and responsible manner. Responsible for determining what equipment should be used to accomplish assigned tasks, what the limitations are for each instrument and whether data collected is reasonable and reliable for the assigned task. TSPC should understand the data collection process and be proficient with Department approved data collection and roadway design software.
As a supervisor, directs the development and training of survey crew members through on the job training and state sponsored training classes. Provides feedback to employees on their annual performance reviews, develops individual development plans for each employee emphasizing career development and professional improvement. incumbent monitors crew development, employee interaction and takes timely action on disciplinary matters when required. Ensures that all staff are aware of and adhere to the District's letter of Expectations, Department Policies and Directives. Maintains proper and timely project charging practices.

Working Conditions
Position located in District 12 / Office of Construction Administration, Orange County.
Assignments are outdoors in various types of terrain and weather conditions and may include but are not limited to: exposure to dirt/noise, walking on uneven surfaces and/or rough terrain, working at great heights, poison oak, insect bites or stings, and chemicals. Assignments are usually within close proximity to vehicle traffic and heavy construction equipment. Possession of a valid driver's license is required to operate a State-owned or leased vehicle.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
