About Us:
The Depositors Insurance Fund (DIF) was established by the Massachusetts Legislature in 1934. The DIF is a private, industry-sponsored insurance fund that insures all deposit accounts above Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) limits at its member banks. The unique combined insurance coverage afforded by the FDIC and the DIF ensures deposit balances are fully protected. Members consist of savings and cooperative banks in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Since the DIF was established, no depositor has ever lost a penny in any Massachusetts savings or cooperative bank.
Position Overview:
The Accounting and Human Resources Manager is a key member of our small team, responsible for combination of accounting, payroll, HR, and administrative functions that keep the organization running smoothly. Reporting to the CFO, this role manages the day-to-day financial operations – including journal entries, reconciliations, accounts payable, and reporting – as well as handling payroll processing and benefits administration. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on professional with strong organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small team environment.
This is a hybrid position, with a mix of in-office and remote work.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Finance:
- Prepare and post all journal entries
- Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts
- Perform monthly bank account reconciliations
- Record investment trades for multiple portfolios with third-party custodian and maintain all trade documentation
- Reconcile investments on a monthly basis between third-party custodian and investment accounting software and investigate any discrepancies
- Process accounts payable and maintain accurate records of expenses
- Process and record deposits for cash receipts
- Assist with monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
- Support budgeting and forecasting efforts
- Maintain internal controls and support internal and external audit process
Human Resources, Benefits, & Administration:
- Process bi-weekly payroll, including ensuring and maintaining accurate deductions and tax withholdings
- Manage and oversee the administration of employee benefits programs (health, dental, vision, retirement, life insurance etc.) including enrollment and compliance reporting
- Maintain employee records and ensure compliance with employment laws and internal policies
- Maintain employee accrued time off balances
- Facilitate and Support recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes
- Serve as point of contact for employee questions related to HR and benefits
- Contribute to a positive organizational culture through employee support and engagement
Note: The responsibilities listed above represent the core functions of the Accounting and Human Resources Manager role. However, given the small size and collaborative nature of our organization, duties and responsibilities may evolve or shift over time to meet the needs of the fund. Other duties may be assigned from time to time.
Minimum Qualifications:
We’re looking for someone who is dependable, detail-oriented, and comfortable working across both accounting and HR functions. While there is no single background for success in this role, a strong candidate will bring a mix of the following:
- High School Diploma required, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, HR, or related field a plus
- 2 years of progressive experience working in accounting, finance, or HR role
- Experience in financial services or insurance industry preferred, but not required
- Demonstrated ability and commitment to handling confidential information with discretion
- Prior experience using accounting and payroll software systems
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- A working knowledge of basic accounting principles and HR compliance best practices
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
