Job Duties

Western State Hospital is seeking a full time Clinical Psychologist Supervisor who will evaluate individuals with serious mental disorders and provide for or refer for needed services. Collaborate with other care disciplines to maximize the quality of interdisciplinary care. Participate in patient planning for an effective transition and continued recovery in a community care setting. Participate in Departmental, Hospital, and state-wide committees as assigned. Provide services at a system level (such as Commissioner appointed forensic evaluations) as directed. Supervise Psychologists and Psychology Associates. Provide expert consultations. Evaluate and review psychological services in areas of supervision; recommend changes and innovations; and coordinate changes. Assist the Psychology Director with departmental oversight as needed. This position will also be responsible for ensuring the requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are met and evaluations are completed; performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur; and address all reported employee safety issues in a timely manner in order to establish and maintain a culture that is committed to workplace safety and health, to include that all staff are trained accordingly.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology
  • Licensed (or licensed eligible) to practice clinical psychology in Virginia
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in applying psychological assessment and intervention methods to individuals with serious mental disorders, forensic evaluations, and forensic policy and procedures
  • Completion of the forensic evaluation training program for Virginia
  • Extensive post-licensure (in Virginia or another state) experience providing interventions to justice-involved individuals with severe mental illness
  • Expert knowledge of serious mental disorders, psychological assessment, and therapeutic interventions
  • Ability to assess, formulate, and provide interventions for individuals with acute and serious mental disorders, including especially complex cases
  • Ability to conduct individual and group psychotherapy
  • Ability to administer and interpret common psychological assessment measures. Consultation skills for the assessment, management, and treatment of individuals with serious mental disorders, including especially complex cases
  • Interpersonal, oral, and writing skills to communication effectively with individuals with serious mental disorders, family members, and other individuals of varying backgrounds and roles
  • Expert knowledge about forensic issues such as competency to stand trial, mental state at the time of the offense, management of NGRI acquittees, and policies and procedures relevant to forensic patients
  • Supervision skills such as procedures for assessing performance and providing feedback, understanding personnel policies, seeking consultation as needed, etc.
