Job Duties

A. Performance Management
(for employees who supervise others) Examples of Measures for Performance Management:
  • Expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the department or unit;
  • Staff receive frequent, constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate;
  • Staff have the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals;
  • The requirements of the performance planning and evaluation system are metmet, and evaluations are completed by established deadlines with proper documentation;documentation.
  • Performance issues are addressed and documented as they occur.
  • Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absences.
In addition:
  • Directs and supervises the activities of the Environmental Services Department and assigned functions effectively and economically, utilizing allotted manpower and assigned resources to provide a safe, sanitary and attractive environment as evident by minimal complaints and positive feedback from QM, surveys and outside sources.
  • Demonstrates effective department leadership / performance of supervisor functions by ensuring expectations are clear, well communicated, and related to the goals and objectives of the department, and as delineated in Catawba Hospital Personnel Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensures staff has the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to accomplish goals; provides constructive feedback, including interim evaluations as appropriate; addresses performance issues and documents as they occur. Conducts re-training as appropriate.
  • Inspects and observes patient care units to ensure adequate delivery of housekeeping services and an acceptable level of cleanliness to ensure infection controls with respect to proper cleaning techniques in accordance with policies and procedures.
  • Actively monitors budget to ensure operations of the Environmental Services Department are within budgetary allocations; controls expenditures by timely monitoring inventories to prevent waste, loss and over purchasing. Reports achievements on monthly manager’s dashboard report to the ADA of the Facility.
  • Oversees the policy coordination and implementation of multiple accreditation standards to ensure continuing compliance with Joint Commission, Medicare, Medicaid, OSHA, and other regulatory agencies so that a minimum of (and no major) non-compliances are cited in reviews.

B. Contract Management
  • Serves an active role as the contract manager for the Laundry, Pest Control, Waste Management, and Infectious Waste Disposal Services.
  • Ensures that contractors comply with contract provisions; verifies the receipt of service for payment; evaluates and documents performance in a timely manner. Maintains a current the Regulated Medical Waste (RMW) manifest current at all times.
  • Monitors the contractual services to ensure all services provided meet Joint Commission and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Monitors the pest control program to ensure that areas of the hospital are properly cleaned and maintained to ensure that pests are not harbored or attracted to the facility; and ensures that areas receive an effective treatment of pesticides within required regulations.
  • Monitors the established infection control program for the cleaned and soiled linen storage areas.
  • Informs the Contract Administrator and the Chief Operating Officer of immediate and time-sensitive issues that need resolution; when appropriate, submits vendor complaint forms.

Proficient in use of computer applications (word processing, database, etc.) and other office equipment. Ability to supervise and direct personnel. Knowledge and application of cleaning methods and chemicals; ability to write correspondence which reflect knowledge of spelling, grammar and composition, communication skills; manage multiple tasks. Demonstrates competencies as defined on attached form.

C. Performance Improvement Activities
  • Participates in and supports the hospital training and re-training program(s) by ensuring that department staff receive timely mandatory training, developing and providing ongoing appropriate documented in-service training and re-training as needed.
  • Researches and evaluates methods, procedures, equipment and supplies in order toto adequately maintain the standards of the department.
  • Actively supports the facility’s performance improvement activities, makes performance improvement a major priority and ensures that a process of improvement is in place within the Environmental Services Department.
  • Participates actively on assigned committees such as Safety Committee, Infection Control, etc.

D. Education / Skill Development
  • Attends all mandatory inservicesin-services.
  • Completes at least ten (10) hours of additional training related to performance/educational needs.
  • Attends seminars and/or IEHA training to obtain / maintain Executive Housekeeper certification.


Minimum Qualifications

  • International Executive Housekeepers Association (IEHA) Certificate, NEHA Certificate, HEM by ECRI/CHEM or other discipline specific credentials.
  • Extensive working knowledge of current CDC recommended cleaning methods/chemistry.


Additional Considerations

  • Experience in the use of computer systems, software, and analytical tools such as Microsoft office. Data base knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of timekeeping software such as Kronos preferred
  • Considerable management experience in a healthcare setting
