Job Duties
- Providing and facilitating specialized new nursing employee clinical orientation and
- Coordinator for the Nursing Preceptorship Program
- Overseeing the nursing department competency program
- Coordinating Certified Nursing Assistant training for Psychiatric Care Technicians,
in DBHDS system, and promoting ongoing RN education progression
- Coordinating nursing student clinical rotations and externships with area higher
- Contributing to nursing recruitment and retention efforts
- Ensuring nursing staff development, education, and competencies are consistent with
standards, the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing and hospital's
mission, goals and objectives.
- Supervising special projects concerning the delivery of care for individuals we serve as
- Taking a lead role in crisis management and problem solving with issues affecting
- Shares responsibility for departmental Nursing Performance Improvement Plan and
other classes
Demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities to:
- Develop and implement new nursing employee orientation, preceptorship, serving as
- Develop and coordinate initial and annual nursing department competency
- Develop, review, and revise nursing department policies related to training, students,
accreditation agencies, and facility goals
- Network with Nursing Schools and SWVMHI Training Department to facilitate
- Chairs Nursing Recruitment and Retention Committee monthly, assisting with
Human Resources
- Gather, prepare and report data to Nurse Manager Committee and Nursing
- Effectively use interpersonal skills to communicate, listen, and motivate
- Build goal-oriented relationships and customer relations between disciplines,
- Utilize autonomy, initiative, and self-motivation to achieve successful outcomes
- Must be able to articulate complementary and unique role of nursing within the
illness, and to role model mental health recovery concepts
- Must be familiar with Virginia Board of Nursing, The Joint Commission standards, and
policies and procedures
- Use advanced computer technology to communicate, develop reports, orientation
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, including English grammar,
- Must complete instructor level for TO (Therapeutic Options), Hand in Hand, DEFUSE
- Think creatively, manage multiple priorities, use sound judgment, problem solve and
- The following physical requirements are necessary: repetitious walking and/or
transport, and/or escort clients and to perform or assist them in activities of daily
living. Must have adequate vision, to include peripheral abilities, to recognize
hazardous situations/areas.

Minimum Qualifications
- Requires License or eligibility to practice as Registered Nurse by the Virginia State
- Requires graduation from an accredited school of Registered Nursing.
- BSN required.
Additional Considerations
- Master’s degree in nursing or education preferred
- Prefer significant experience in nursing management, leadership, and/or education,
- Strongly prefer experience working with people with mental illness, geriatric issues,
