Job Duties
- Screen and check-in all visitors entering the building and observe visitation as assigned.
- Check all bags, purses, briefcases, etc. that all visitors bring into the building.
- Monitor patients at assigned units.
- Monitor the civil admission suite during the admission process. Providing support to the patients and staff.
- Complete courtyard searches each shift prior to patients accessing courtyard privileges.
- Perform building environmental/safety rounds checking all locks, patient rooms, visitation areas, etc. both inside and outside of the perimeter of the building and report any findings to charge nurse for immediate correction.
- Distribute patient mail as assigned and monitor when opened by patients.
- Ensure that only authorized personnel enter and exit areas assigned.
- Transport and escort patients safely and securely to both on and off campus appointments where support is needed to manage elopement or behavioral risks.
- Properly apply hospital approved restraint devices as needed under the direction of the charge RN.
- Respond in a professional manner to various incidents & emergencies as trained.
- Maintain appropriate appearance/presence for the optimum results to prevent incidents.
- Use only approved T.O. techniques when dealing with verbally abusive and physically aggressive clients.
- Able to think quickly and independently.
- Able to deal with verbally abusive, physical aggressive and provocative behaviors from patients without responding inappropriately.
- Respond in a professional manner to various incidents and emergencies.
- Lead debriefing following responses and complete documentation as directed.
- Ensure transportation vehicles are appropriately fueled and maintenance logs are up to date.
Maintain Therapeutic Environment:
• • Makes routine rounds to ensure the safety and security of patients and staff. Maintains close observation of the unit.
- Coordinate ward searches and pat downs with NUM or designee to ensure that the environment is safe for all patients, staff and visitors and report findings to the supervisor.
- Assists in escorting patient to scheduled activities.
- Adhere to and maintain an awareness of current policies and procedures.
- Follow established safety practices.
- Orients new clients to the unit, as assigned.
- Reports adverse environmental conditions to the RN and collaborates to improve the milieu.
- Attend shift report prior to reporting to assigned area
KSA's Required for the Position include:
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing and use good judgment. Ability to lift heavy objects, walk or stand a minimum of 80% of time on shift, bend at waist and knees, use upper extremities (hands) to hold, grasp and manipulate work materials. Ability to administer CPR and perform T.O. Ability to work overtime hours. Ability to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate client behavior through observing conversing and listening. Interact with clients in a therapeutic manner. Monitor and report changes in patients’ medical and psychiatric status to supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
Previous experience/related training/education with security and in a psychiatric setting.
Valid Driver’s License.
Additional Considerations
Preferred: Current enrollment in or completion of a degree program in Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, Nursing, or any other human services major.
