Job Duties
THE AGENCY
The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation is the state’s lead conservation agency and it takes a diverse agency to work for a diverse commonwealth. DCR protects what people care about – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water and safe infrastructure. We manage 43 Virginia State Parks, which has thousands of campsites, hundreds of cabins, beaches, festivals, educational programs, more than 500 miles of trails … the list goes on.

THE OFFICE
The Real Property Office (RPO) is responsible for the agency’s land acquisition and assists in land conservation efforts throughout the Commonwealth. RPO works with the State Parks and Natural Heritage Divisions to delineate and enforce boundaries for DCR-owned lands. The Office works with landowners near parks and natural area preserves to protect properties with open-space easements and to provide stewardship for those easements. In addition, RPO oversees the agency's leasing program for owned lands, field offices, and residential staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience of land conservation, land management, natural resources, and planning.
- Familiarity with real estate law and principles of real-estate management.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Commonwealth real estate and easement acquisition processes, policies, and requirements.
- Demonstrated knowledge of real estate legal instruments, deed restrictions, easements, or other land preservation documents.
Additional Considerations
- Knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), database and spreadsheet usage, and data management techniques.
- Knowledge of natural resource, agricultural, forestal, and historic conservation practices.
- Awareness of general recreational and landscape principles.
