Job Duties
The Chief of Staff serves as a trusted advisor and senior leader within the Virginia Department of Corrections, supporting the Director in executing the agency’s mission and initiatives. This executive-level position is responsible for working with the Director to ensure the agency’s strategic objectives are met through effective coordination, oversight, and management of key initiatives, work units, and legal matters. The Chief of Staff acts as the primary liaison between the agency and the Office of Attorney General, collaborating on complex legal and regulatory issues. This role requires exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of public safety operations, state governance, and legal frameworks. This position is critical to the success of the Virginia Department of Corrections, providing strategic leadership and expert guidance on operational and legal matters. The Chief of Staff plays a vital role in safeguarding the agency’s mission to serve and protect the public.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated work experience in public administration, law, business administration, or a related field. Extensive experience in executive leadership, public safety, legal practice, or a related field. Proven track record of working collaboratively with state or federal government agencies. Prior experience managing legal or compliance-related issues within a public safety or governmental context. Comprehensive knowledge of public safety operations, including law enforcement, emergency management, or corrections. Extensive understanding of state and federal laws, regulations, and policies impacting public safety agencies. Extensive experience with legal processes, including administrative law, litigation, contracts, and risk management. Knowledge of state governance and inter-agency collaboration frameworks. Superior leadership and management skills, with experience working with diverse teams and driving organizational success. Strong legal acumen, including the ability to interpret complex legal documents and provide actionable advice. Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to navigate complex and high-pressure situations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of building trust and consensus across diverse stakeholders. Ability to analyze, synthesize, and present complex information clearly and effectively. Ability to lead and inspire teams, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and excellence. Capacity to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a dynamic environment. Ability to collaborate effectively with legal counsel, senior executives, legislators, and external partners.
Additional Considerations
Juris Doctor (JD) degree or equivalent legal experience.
