Job Description
The Bureau of Water Supply seeks to hire a City Research Scientist II for a position in the Distribution Water Quality Operations (DWQO) Division, Drinking Water Operations Directorate located in Queens, New York.
Under direction, of the Section Chief of Laboratory Support and Microbiology, the City Research Scientist II will serve as Sample Coordination Supervisor and will position will support the Distribution Laboratory in continuing to operate 365 days per year and ensure compliance with New York State Environmental Laboratory Approval Program (ELAP) and other applicable regulatory requirements. The Sample Coordination Supervisor will provide essential laboratory supervision for sample processing and analysis in accordance with regulatory requirements for drinking water and environmental water testing using methods approved by New York State. Specific duties include:
- Supervising the assembly and preparation of drinking water sampling bottles, coolers and test kits.
- Supervising sample reception and sample kit and cooler distribution and shipping tasks.
- Supervising the performance of receiving, delivery, storage and disposal of laboratory and field supplies.
- Supervising the cleaning of laboratory glassware and plasticware for chemistry and microbiological sections as needed.
- Supervising the operation of autoclaves, dishwashers and reagent water systems in washroom and media room as needed.
- Supervising the preparation of media, reagents, solutions as needed.

Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite software including Excel, Word, Power Point.
- An understanding of the Agency’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
- Familiarity with data compilation protocols, including use of data reporting programs associated with laboratory information management systems i.e., STARLIMS and At-The -Tap Application.
- Ability to ensures data entries in notebooks and files of computer output are complete and legible.
- Ability too promptly submits data for review by specified deadline.
- Ability to maintain accurate electronic and written records.

Minimum Qualifications
1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.

Residency Requirement
New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
