Job Duties

. The Department of Historic Resources (DHR) is seeking an experienced, full-time Project Review Archaeologist to conduct reviews of federal and state projects and provide written comments regarding the project’s effects on archaeo-logical resources.
Duties: This position serves as main point of contact for assigned agencies; conducts timely and consistently accurate reviews based on critical analysis of individual projects; provides written comments regarding the project’s effects on known or expected archaeological resources; interprets federal and state regulations and guidelines; reviews reports for content and consistency with applicable standards and guidelines; applies the National Register criteria to evaluate ar-chaeological resources and make recommendations for further identification and evaluation; makes assessments of ef-fect, requests consideration of alternatives, and recommends appropriate treatment of significant archaeological re-sources; provides technical assistance; performs field inspections; provides training workshops in statutory requirements for historic resources and/or available preservation tools; and participates on the Archaeological Subcommittee of the National Register Evaluation Team. May be assigned additional duties.


Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of technical, legal, and historic resources management practices and procedures as they apply to archaeological resources; agency programs and procedures, regulations; and project management methods and techniques. General knowledge of the history of Virginia. Demonstrated ability to apply technical, legal, and cultural knowledge and planning principles and practices to complex projects; plan, schedule, coordinate, assess, and evaluate environmental review and compliance program area functions; analyze, comprehend, interpret, and evaluate complex technical and legal documents; communicate effectively orally and in writing; negotiating skills; effective time and conflict management; public speaking; presentation; computer proficiency; VITASHARE, ePIX and VCRIS knowledge.

Applicants must meet or exceed the Secretary of Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards in Archaeology through an advanced degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.

Experience demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of the historic and prehistoric archaeology of Virginia and/or the Mid-Atlantic Region; archaeological resource protection and project management principles, methods, and techniques; applicable state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines; and, agency programs.
Experience demonstrating knowledge of and ability to conduct and evaluate archaeological survey and mitigation projects; to apply technical, legal and cultural knowledge and planning principles to complex archaeological projects.
Experience demonstrating the ability to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate complex technical and legal documents; and ; to provide technical assistance related to the program area.
Demonstrated experience communicating and negotiating effectively both orally and in writing, time management, and, working effectively and exercising good judgement under stressful conditions.
Demonstrated experience researching and analyzing documents; demonstrated providing technical assistance related to program area.


Additional Considerations

Limited teleworking may be possible, in accordance with policies of the Commonwealth, after the employee has successfully worked for the agency for a time no less than 6 months.
