Job Description

The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City's green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund the restoration and management across these ecosystems.

Major Responsibilities
  • Under general direction, with latitude for independent judgment and decision, oversee coastal forest and grassland restoration in Idlewild Park and lead the implementation of an agreement with Port Authority of NY/NJ that governs the federally regulated airspace over the Park.
  • Supervise an in-house field crew and coordinate with contractors to conduct natural area restoration work including invasive species management; tree risk management; tree removal, pruning and replacement; and native species establishment in forested natural areas within Idlewild Park.
  • Collaborate with other teams of the Natural Resources Group to plan and execute contracts, procure plant material, engage volunteers, secure environmental permits, and implement best practices for habitat protection.
  • Manage annual budgets; record on-the-ground restoration actions; compile, analyze and interpret data; and present results.
  • Review proposed plans and provide guidance on best practices for projects by other divisions and agencies that impact natural areas of Idlewild Park and surrounding parks.
  • Prepare technical reports and update colleagues within Parks, other governmental agencies, and community stakeholders on ongoing operations and project status.
  • Engage local community groups, including the Eastern Queens Alliance, by providing technical support in ecosystem management and education about specific ecological communities within Idlewild Park.
  • Liaise with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, other divisions of the Agency and non-governmental partners to maximize Park ecosystem health, resiliency and benefits to the public.
