Job Description
Major Responsibilities
- Under general direction, with latitude for independent judgment and decision, oversee coastal forest and grassland restoration in Idlewild Park and lead the implementation of an agreement with Port Authority of NY/NJ that governs the federally regulated airspace over the Park.
- Supervise an in-house field crew and coordinate with contractors to conduct natural area restoration work including invasive species management; tree risk management; tree removal, pruning and replacement; and native species establishment in forested natural areas within Idlewild Park.
- Collaborate with other teams of the Natural Resources Group to plan and execute contracts, procure plant material, engage volunteers, secure environmental permits, and implement best practices for habitat protection.
- Manage annual budgets; record on-the-ground restoration actions; compile, analyze and interpret data; and present results.
- Review proposed plans and provide guidance on best practices for projects by other divisions and agencies that impact natural areas of Idlewild Park and surrounding parks.
- Prepare technical reports and update colleagues within Parks, other governmental agencies, and community stakeholders on ongoing operations and project status.
- Engage local community groups, including the Eastern Queens Alliance, by providing technical support in ecosystem management and education about specific ecological communities within Idlewild Park.
- Liaise with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, other divisions of the Agency and non-governmental partners to maximize Park ecosystem health, resiliency and benefits to the public.

ADMINISTRATIVE HORTICULTURIST - 1007C
Minimum Qualifications
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with major study in horticulture, arboriculture, or landscape architecture and four years of full-time, paid experience in horticultural work of which two (2) years must have been in a supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive capacity; or
2. A satisfactory equivalent. However, all candidates must have at least a high school diploma or evidence of having passed an examination for a high school equivalency diploma and one year of supervisory, administrative, consultative, managerial, or executive experience as described above.
Preferred Skills
1. Graduate degree in natural resource management, biology, earth science, ecology or related field. 2. At least 5 years of experience in arboriculture, forest restoration or natural areas management. 3. Certification as Arborist by the International Society for Arboriculture. 4. Proficiency using Esri GIS software for mapping and analysis. 5. Excellent analytic, financial accounting, data management and writing skills. 6. Experience collaborating with multiple stakeholders in an interdisciplinary and governmental context. 7. Demonstrated ability to serve in a leadership role and work independently. 8. Valid New York State driver license.
