Summary
- Oversees the daily operations of the testing functions of the Histology Department.
- Offers expertise in all areas of the Histology department to include, and not limited to: H&E, special stains, and Immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining.
- Serves as reference to staff, Pathologists, and others in laboratory leadership, takes part in department operation planning, and ensures effective use of system resources.
- Identifies problems in the department and operating systems and institutes appropriate corrective actions.
- Participates in process improvement activities.
- Oversees staffing matrices, conduct performance evaluations, and discipline employees.
- Ensures policy and procedures are followed by staff.
- Ensures compliance with all regulating agencies.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Monitor and evaluate lab operations, workflow, and employees on an on-going basis and direct re-assignment of job duties or changes in processes/ workflow as needed.
- Work closely with histology management team to optimize workflow, quality, efficiency, and productivity.
- Train and schedule personnel assigned to meet testing and reporting turnaround time requirements.
- Maintain quality control records on all equipment.
- Assure proper disposal and handling of hazardous waste to include xylene, reagent alcohol, formaldehyde.
- Ensure that the laboratory's instrument/equipment calibrations and maintenance are conducted and documented in accordance with written procedures.
- Oversee archival of materials per retention schedule.
- Oversee/perform monthly reviews of various logs/records.
- Oversee the laboratory's inventory, reagents and supplies.
- Exercise all laboratory safety precautions and adhere to lab procedures as stated in procedure manuals.
- Perform all job responsibilities in alignment with the industrys best security practices and regulatory guidelines to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected health information and other sensitive company data.
- Work with other departments within the client and subsidiaries.
- Recommends and institutes corrective action promptly, if not immediately, following a qualified incident, potential problems, or corporate recommendation.
- Perform other duties as assigned by department Manager or Laboratory Director.
- Adheres to Dermcare Management core values, safety, compliance, and Company policies and procedures.
Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology is essential.
- Ability to use tissue processors, embedding center, microtome and H&E stainers.
- Demonstrates participation in Quality Assessment processes, incorporates continuous quality improvement into practice.
- Meticulous attention to detail, good manual dexterity.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform Quality Control analysis troubleshooting and effective problem-solving skills.
- Must wear proper PPE when working in laboratory areas.
- Assist in the development and implementation of departmental policies and procedures and maintain department procedure manuals.
- Reports quality results with limited errors.
- Ability to operate personal computer and maintain records.
- Ability to prioritize work and manage time effectively and efficiently in order to meet department turn-around-time goals.
- Ability to communicate successfully with the health care team, supporting quality improvement and customer service expectations.
- Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift 25 pounds.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience Required:
- HT/HTL (ASCP) Certification.
- Associate's degree (AA) or Bachelor's Science (BS).
- Maintains appropriate continuing education for certification/licensure, and to increase basic knowledge.
- FL: current Histology Supervisor license.
- CA: current state license to perform laboratory testing.
- Over one-year supervisory experience.
- Over 5 years experience within the field of Histology required.
