General Summary:
The Director of Racquets (DOR) will serve as a senior staff member in leading a “best in class” program that aligns with the Des Moines Golf and Country Club values and culture. The DOR is responsible for all day-to-day operations of the program and facilities through management and leadership of our teaching professionals and support staff. In addition to the DOR’s leadership and teambuilding skills, a focus on competitive, social, and family activities for all levels of players across tennis, and pickleball is paramount.
The DOR will plan, supervise, direct, and implement all racquet programs including, but not limited to, women's events, men's events, tournaments, junior events, and twilight events for both tennis and pickleball. In addition to delivering an exceptional level of member service and leadership to department team members, an important focus of this position is the management of program sales and achieving agreed upon participation targets as outlined in the annual operating budget.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- The DOR is a highly visible position requiring strong presence, leadership, and written and verbal communication skills with members and staff.
- Oversees high-performing racquet operations and programming, with exemplary service and connectivity to Members and the team.
- Enforce all Des Moines Golf and Country Club rules- pertaining to the racquet complex.
- Give lessons, direct clinics, organize tournaments and inter-club racquet activities.
- Supervise all Des Moines Golf and Country Club employees working in the racquets program.
- Create an annual calendar of events that includes events and activities for adults and juniors, including competitive, social, and instructional programming for all levels and other events/activities deemed to enhance the racquets experience at the Club.
- Manage a Tennis Pro Shop, offering a line of tennis equipment and clothing for sale to members and dependents as determined by management.
- Provide leadership and direction to the Racquets Committee, all while sharing their vision and goals for the path of DMGCC racquet sports.
- Ensure that the budget allowances for racquet activities are always adhered to.
- Work under the supervision of the General Manager to coordinate racquet activities with other Des Moines Golf and Country Club functions and to promote excellent relationships with members, dependents, guests, and other Club employees.
- Maintain the Tennis dome at levels determined by the General Manager. Report any maintenance to the Director of Facilities immediately.
- Oversee staff upkeep of facilities in the Racquet complex and surrounding areas. This includes the locker rooms, Pro Shop, and court areas. Staff will clean and sweep court surfaces as needed.
- Ensure that all staff members will be First Aid and CPR certified before the season begins.
- Work with HR on job descriptions for all staff positions, so are ready before the season begins.
- Ensure that non-members are not provided merchandise or services of the Club unless these non-members are bona fide guests of a member or dependent of the Club.
- Under the direction of the General Manager, shall have the responsibility of purchasing all tennis merchandise for sale in the Racquets Shop.
- Verify that all merchandise is displayed, tagged, inventoried, and controlled based on generally accepted retail practices.
- Inspect on a periodic basis the quality of the playing surfaces, fences, windscreens, water coolers, teaching equipment and courtside amenities, and make recommendations for improvements.
- Keep the General Manager informed of the status of the facilities and equipment for the purpose of budgeting for replacement and repair items and of long-range capital replacement items.
- Ensure that all sales for merchandise or services shall only be on a charge basis.
- Attend weekly senior staff meetings and maintain close relationships with other Department Directors.
- Responsible for the completion of the season for the storage and accountability of all tennis merchandise.
- Responsible for the timely and accurate submission of all administrative forms to include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Timecards
- Tennis Fee Disbursements
- Merchandise Purchase Orders and Invoices
- Member Charges
- Purchase Orders and Invoices
- Monthly Inventory Records Year End Inventory
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Certified member of RSPA, PTR, DCA, CRSE
- Strong interpersonal skills required to interact with members, guests, and other employees.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
Compensation
Salary is open and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The club offers an excellent benefit package, including 401k with a 3% match.
