TITLE : SUBS Substitute Associate
DEPARTMENT : Office of Talent and Personnel
REPORTS TO : Building Administrator
RECEIVES GUIDANCE FROM : Classroom Teacher
POSITION INVENTORY : Temporary Employee
FLSA STATUS : Non-Exempt
BASIC FUNCTION :
Assist teachers in the instruction, supervision and care of students and children in a variety of instructional settings, including special education, work / community settings, Head Start, and early learning childcare settings.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
1. Assist classroom teacher with educational activities.
2. Take directions from teachers, building administrators and Student and Family Services support staff.
3. Follow behavior management plans for individual students.
4. Maintain students' daily behavior logs.
5. Assist in the implementation and monitoring of students' Individual Education Plans.
6. Prepare and organize instructional materials and equipment.
7. Perform personal care duties for students with disabilities as needed.
8. Prepare and supervise students in bus loading / unloading.
9. Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly instructional environment.
10. Assist in implementing consistent behavior management strategies and procedures.
11. Supervise lunchroom, playground, halls, classroom and other assigned areas.
12. Assist in meal preparation and clean up in Head Start settings.
13. Assist in cleaning and sanitizing the classroom environment.
14. Assist with instruction in the community setting, as required.
15. Clarify and reinforce teacher directions.
16. Assist students with assignments.
17. Drill to reinforce skills taught by the teacher.
18. Listen to students read / read to students.
19. Chart / graph student performance.
20. Prepare bulletin boards, games, and flash cards.
21. Organize daily student work folders.
22. Prepare attendance cards and reports.
23. Feed, toilet and diaper students as needed.
24. Under teacher direction, implement specific strategies to maintain / increase appropriate behavior and de-escalate inappropriate behavior.
25. Supervise students in community / work settings.
26. Lift, carry and correctly position students with physical disabilities.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (for every DMPS position) :
1. Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
2. Maintain confidentiality.
3. Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
4. Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
HIRING SPECIFICATIONS :
Required :
1. High School Diploma, GED, or HiSET.
2. Ability to relate to students with disabilities
3. Ability to carry out duties cooperatively with others
4. Oral and written communication skills
5. Visual and auditory acuity for supervisory functions
6. Skills in oral and written communications
7. Skills in organization and human relations
Desired :
1. Successful work or volunteer experience with disabled population
2. Supervisory experience with children
3. Ability to relate to students with disabilities
4. 48 hours of post-secondary education or Paraeducator Certification
