Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION: To support the Community Garden program in providing culture-based education for elementary students and community members in South Phoenix.
This is a hybrid position, split between DBG's Community Garden, located at Spaces of Opportunity (1200 W Vineyard Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85041), and working from home.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Vegetable Garden Education (40%) -
- Community Garden maintenance (25%) -
o Assist Community Farmer with weekly irrigation days.
o Participate in Community Garden volunteer workday.
- * Event Coordination (20%) -
o Assist with coordination of educational and community building events, including chef demonstration at Spaces of Opportunity's Farmers' Market, Fund the Farm, volunteer potlucks, and DBG staff volunteer day.
- * Administrative tasks (15%) -
o Update harvest/donation, volunteer attendance, and student attendance logs.
o Scan volunteer forms.
o Attend Community Garden monthly meetings.
o Social media promotion for Community Garden.
o Assist with Community Garden monthly newsletter.
Pay: $17.50 per hour
Requirements
- Lived experience and/or experience working within BIPOC communities.
- Interest in culture-based, land-centered, and/or justice centered education.
- Familiarity with concepts of food sovereignty and food justice.
- Some vegetable gardening experience preferred, but not required.
- Ability to be open and flexible to new ways of working with diverse communities.
- Familiarity with Zoom, Google suite, Canva, and Instagram.
- Ability to work outdoors, often in challenging terrain and extreme heat.
Equipment Used
Typical farm and garden equipment.
Internal Communication
Regular communication and interaction with Garden staff, volunteers, and Spaces of Opportunity partners.
External Communication
Regular communication with volunteers, partner organizations, and the public.

Physical demands include both those associated with outdoor work and a normal office environment, and which could be in the Garden, or at Spaces of Opportunity. Reasonable accommodations may be made, when necessary and feasible, to allow a qualified individual to perform essential job functions.
