Position Purpose
Serve as the coordinator for the Central Arizona arm of the greenhouse gas emissions portion of the Southwest Urban Corridor Integrated Field Laboratory (SW-IFL) project.
Position Description
The SW-IFL Coordinator will lead and train volunteers for the project and introduce them to the purpose, background, and protocols of the project, assisted by the SW-IFL Intern. The project will kick off in March with the first volunteer training event. The coordinator will help launch the program in the Central Arizona region by hosting and advertising trainings, communicating with partners, recruiting volunteers, and assisting with sampling efforts and logistics. The main sampling seasons for collecting samples will be March-May (spring annuals). The coordinator will be expected to work an average of 10-15 hours per week, many of these hours may be on the weekend.
About Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA)
The Central Arizona Conservation Alliance (CAZCA – cazca.org) is an initiative of Desert Botanical Garden. We convene partner organizations to pursue conservation projects, and outreach and education initiatives.
Essential Duties
- Host and recruit volunteers to attend introductory trainings to introduce the purpose, background, and protocols of the project
- Host and recruit volunteers to attend field trainings to work with small groups of volunteers in the field to gather data together, making sure that they are following protocols
- These should be held in different parts of Maricopa County with different groups to ensure coverage of the region, in natural and urban areas
- Group field trainings will ensure quality control and help increase enthusiasm and geographic coverage
- Advertise trainings widely across networks
- Organize map assignments among volunteers, helping to direct volunteers on where to collect samples to fill in unsampled areas
- Communication with Discovery Fellows Challie Facemire and Alexandra Schuessler – weekly check-ins
- Other tasks and support as needed to elevate the program
Pay: $22.00 per hour
Requirements
- Recent graduate from a science based Master’s program, or undergraduate degree and 2 years relevant experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong, demonstrated interest and knowledge of conservation, environmental science, ecology, community science, science education, or related field
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and within a collaborative environment
- Interest in science communication and community engagement
- Access to a computer and internet
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to work off-hours with occasional evenings or weekends
- Ability to work outdoors

Typical office equipment
Internal Communication
Regular communication with Garden employees.
External Communication
Regular communication with scientists, volunteers, advocates, academics, and the general public.
Working Conditions
Physical demands include both those associated with a normal office environment, and outdoor work, which could be in the Garden, or in the field (local, regional). Field work may include hiking and backpacking while carrying necessary materials for events. Travel for presentations also may be required.
