SUMMARY: To develop in each student: a suitable level of physical fitness, competent management of body and acquisition of physical skills, acquisition of desirable social standards and ethical conduct; acquisition of safety skill and habits; enjoyment of wholesome recreation, and acquisition of a desirable self-concept and self-image.
SUPERVISES: Instructional Assistant (if applicable)
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Arizona Teaching Certificate with Physical Education Endorsement
- Six semester hours of practice teaching or two full years of full time teaching experience, at least half in physical education

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develops a physical fitness program suitable to age level of student.
- Teaches knowledge and skill in various movement education and sport areas.
- Establishes and maintains standards of safety relatedness and proper use of facilities and equipment.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior conducive to learning.
- Evaluates student’s progress in physical fitness, skill level and social behavior.
- Participates in planning for use of equipment and facilities.
- Participates in selection and requisitioning of equipment and materials.
- Controls the use and storage of school owned equipment.
- Maintains proper inventory of materials and equipment.
- Communicates with parents and nurse regarding physical limitations of students.
- Communicates with parents regarding student’s progress.
- Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs.
- Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
- Maintains professional competence through continuing education, in-service programs, and self-selected professional growth activities related to Physical Education.
- Perform such other duties and assumes such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent/Designee.
Statutory Responsibilities:
- Enforce the course of study for the assigned class or classes.
- Enforce the use of the adopted textbooks for the assigned class or classes.
- Enforce the rules and regulations governing the schools prescribed by the Governing Board, the Arizona Department of Education and any other lawfully empowered authority.
- Hold pupils to strict account for disorderly conduct.
- Exercise supervision over pupils on the playgrounds and during recess.
- Make the decision to promote or retain a pupil in the Pendergast schools.
- Make such reports as may be reasonably required by the superintendent of Public Instruction, County School Superintendent, Governing Board or School Administration.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provision of the Board policy or evaluation of professional personnel.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education materials and programs. Ability to write reports, procedure manuals, and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of teachers, students, administration, and the community.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to work with mathematical such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
