Job Description

This position will co-lead an NASA Funded study "In situ ice-water ChemistrY investigation of Carbon and Life in Extreme environments (ICYCLE) " to investigate methane lakes on the North Slope of Alaska as proxies for Titan, a moon of Saturn. The primary investigations are work as a co-lead investigator of the ICYCLE team to : 1) determine the 13C isotopic signature of the methane to understand the biological / geological origin, 2) characterize the abundance, diversity, and activity of microbial populations within the ice to understand when, where, and how methane is consumed, or produced,3) characterize the organic and inorganic compounds in the lake water and ice that may serve as nutrients, and 4) determine the timing and abundance of methane release into the atmosphere to understand the signature of methane available to remote sensing platforms, and to help quantify the flux of greenhouse gases emitted from the lakes.

Required Qualifications :

Compensation Grade

120 / hour; no benefits.

Schedule

As needed; participate in field trips, data collation and analysis, writing of manuscripts.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift 50 lbs, work long days in the field in cold, polar ecosystems, drive a snowmobile.
