Durham-based DesignHammer is looking for a versatile Web Developer to join our dynamic team. Applicant must be excited to implement cutting edge technology on a range of platforms for a wide variety of organizations. Experience building and maintaining standards-compliant websites a must. The Software Developer will report to the Lead Developer. You must submit code samples, or equivalent to be considered.

You must be experienced in MySQL and PHP development and prepared to provide code samples and describe examples of your work as part of your application.

While the company has been working distributed since March due to the pandemic, we expect to be back in our offices in 2021. Candidates available to work at our Durham, NC office by Spring 2021 are preferred.

Job responsibilities will include:


  • Collaborating with DesignHammer staff to meet project specifications
  • Code standards compliant HTML/CSS/JS
  • Build new websites using WordPress, Drupal, and other frameworks
  • Maintain existing websites
  • Write articles for DesignHammer blog
  • Attend local professional meetings/meetups for professional growth and represent DesignHammer


We are looking for candidates who are:


  • A good fit with DesignHammer culture — nice people of integrity who work hard and play hard. No drama.
  • Self-motivated and detail-oriented who can work independently 
  • Able to contribute as a team player on an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Experience developing for Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP a requirement.
  • Experienced in developing sites for LAMP
  • Proficient with JavaScript and CSS required
  • Proficient with at least one common reactive JavaScript framework, such as Vue.js, AngularJS, or React (Vue.js or AngularJS preferred)
  • Experience with JSON and Python a plus.
  • Experience with Drupal and/or WordPress a plus.
  • Experienced with version control systems such as Git
  • Passionate on coding to best practices
  • Looking to play a major role in shaping the online presence of major regional organizations

Selection criteria:


  • Quality of samples (you must be able to share code samples, preferably on github or the like, and be beyond coursework)
  • Communication skills
  • Successful independent work history
  • Ability to follow directions
