Position Summary
The School Nurse gives leadership and guidance in developing and maintaining a total school health program. The School Nurse works with the administration, other school nurses, and classroom teachers to properly direct and carry out their nursing activities. This is a full-time, school session position working (Late - August through Mid-June).
Essential Responsibilities
Administrative:
- Participates in the formulation of policies, standards, and objectives of the school health program.
- Maintains and uses cumulative health record keeping system (Magnus) for all pupils.
- Administers basic first aid and/or OTC/prescription medication as required using evidence-based decision making and accountability.
- Assist students with specific health/medical needs (such as diabetes, food allergies, ADHD, etc.).
- Participates in formulating policies for the care of pupils who become ill or who are injured at school.
- Consults with parents regarding the health of their children.
- Assists in planning and adhering to the school health budget.
- Keeps the administrators and other school personnel informed about problems and acquaints them with resources of the community.
- Maintains lines of communication with teachers and other school personnel in order that cooperative action will meet the needs of pupils.
- Observes the school environment for safety hazards and sanitary conditions and reports to responsible persons.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the School Director.
Instructional:
- Participates in curriculum planning and evaluation in the school and serves as a resource person on the area of health to teachers and other personnel.
- Administer CPR and First Aid training to faculty and staff as needed.
- Serves as a member on committees concerned with safety, emotional, mental, physical, and social health.
- Studies and evaluates own job performance and plans for continuing professional growth.
- Serves as a health consultant to school personnel, pupils, and parents.
- Serves as a resource person to school personnel regarding the various aspects of health education and provides or suggests health education materials for classroom use.
Qualifications
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse (RN) in Michigan.
- BSN degree or higher preferred.
- Certified to teach CPR/AED.
- Willing to act as a guest teacher in Pre-K grade classrooms, teaching a variety of health topics.
- Recent experience in public health, school nursing, and/or pediatric nursing.
