Position Summary
On the Rise Academy is a Michigan Department of Education-approved alternative teacher certification program that prepares participants to become exceptional teachers in Cognitive Impairment who will uphold the mission, vision, and values of Detroit Public Schools Community District. Individuals admitted to the program will become On the Rise Academy “Continuing Teachers”. The program commences with admissions coursework. Continuing Teachers are required to complete the Cognitive Impairment coursework strand and pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Cognitive Impairment (115) before moving into an Exceptional Student Education - Cognitive Impairment position. The 3-year program offers a rigorous training model that includes coursework, supervised field experience and multiple performance screens. Continuing Teachers who complete all program requirements, including passing performance screens, will be recommended for a standard teaching certificate with an endorsement in Cognitive Impairment after their third year of effective teaching. The program is $6,000, though tuition will be forgiven for participants who remain teaching in DPSCD in their certification area for a minimum of 6 years. - Possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- Possess a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from the most recent degree-granting program)

- Received Thrive Evaluation Rating of “Effective” or "Highly Effective” for school years 2022-2023 and 2023-2024

- Attend regularly and engage fully in a rigorous training model which includes the Admissions course and completion of the equivalent of 32 credits of online and face to face coursework.
- Pass the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) in Cognitive Impairment.
- Participate in and engage fully in 1:1 and small group coaching.
- Meet the minimum requirements as indicated in the Michigan Department of Education (MDE)-approved alternative certification program requirements.
- Follow all District policies, work rules, essential functions, and procedures to which regular teachers are subject and which good teaching practice dictates.
- Pass Pre-Service Institute, a 7-week summer school training experience taking place June – August 2024. Dates TBD.
- Other duties as assigned.
