Job Summary:

The Lead Video Engineer is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and optimization of video streaming systems across IP based production networks. This role is crucial in ensuring high-quality, low-latency video delivery in both live and on-demand environments. The Lead Video Engineer will be responsible for managing and maintaining high-quality video systems and collaborating with production, broadcast, and IT teams to deliver seamless and engaging visual content. This role is essential for ensuring top-tier quality in all video and audio elements during live events, post-produced content, and internal productions over IP.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Video Production Operations: Manage all technical aspects of video production for live games, stadium events, and post-produced content, ensuring a high standard of video and audio quality.
  • Lead transition to IP-based workflow: Oversee the transition from 1080i SDI video production workflow to a 1080p ST2110 workflow at Comerica Park
  • Coordination with Integrator: Take a leading role in receiving ST2110 training from project integrator (CTI), as well as the new system’s full scope of video processing and signal flow, while ensuring that new systems are capable of meeting the requirements for Tigers Game Presentation on Opening Day (April 4, 2025).
  • Manage Video and Broadcast Systems: Operate and maintain broadcast and video engineering systems, including routers, servers, switchers, monitors, cameras, and related broadcast equipment.
  • Supervise Production Team: Lead a team of video engineers, camera operators, and production assistants, providing training, scheduling, and hands-on support during live events and studio shoots.
  • Coordinate In-Stadium Presentation: Collaborate with game-day operations to execute in-stadium video elements, including replays, scoreboard graphics, and fan engagement features. Serve as on-site Engineer in Charge for majority of Tigers home games.
  • Troubleshoot Technical Issues: Quickly identify and resolve any technical issues during live events to minimize interruptions and ensure smooth production.
  • Liaise with Broadcast Partners: Coordinate with television broadcast partners to ensure technical alignment and smooth execution of simulcasts or in-game cut-ins.
  • Quality Control: Monitor and evaluate the video and audio quality, ensuring compliance with production standards for color correction, signal consistency, and audio synchronization.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Schedule and perform regular maintenance, updates, and troubleshooting on production equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
  • Manage Inventory: Oversee inventory of video production equipment, identifying needs for repair, upgrades, or new purchases.
  • Document Production Processes: Develop and maintain technical documentation, including equipment manuals, process workflows, and production checklists.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in video engineering, broadcast production, or related field, ideally in a sports or live event environment. Previous experience as a broadcast or video engineer is highly preferred.
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Video Production, Broadcast Engineering, Media Technology, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in video production systems such as Ross, EVS, Evertz, Grass Valley, and other broadcast systems.
    • Strong understanding of video signal flow, camera and video system setups, video/audio standards, and codecs.
    • Expertise in IP-based video workflows and familiarity with SMPTE standards.
    • Proficiency in troubleshooting issues with video switchers, graphics systems, replay systems, and video routers.
  • Project Management: Proven ability to lead projects, including planning, budgeting, and implementing production processes.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments and with external partners.
  • Team Leadership: Experience managing, training, and leading production teams in high-pressure, fast-paced environments.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to stay calm under pressure and resolve technical issues swiftly and effectively.
  • Work closely with content creation IT, AV, Operations, and other groups to resolve problems and assist in their areas of need. 
  • Extensive knowledge of IP production environment.
  • Extensive knowledge of audio control, audio architect.
  • Wireless frequency coordination.
  • Must be willing to work nights, weekends, holidays and long hours standing on feet.
