Peer Support Specialist - Outpatient Clinics

Under the general supervision of the VP of Direct Clinical Services, the Peer Support Specialist – Outpatient clinics offers guidance and support to people who are struggling with substance abuse, psychological trauma, or mental health disorders.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Offers guidance and support to people who are struggling with substance abuse, psychological trauma, or mental health disorders.   
  • Functions as a role model to peers exhibiting competency in personal recovery.
  • Serves as a consumer advocate providing client information and peer support for clients. 
  • Assists clients with finding resources for housing, employment and education while helping to develop a secure network of community support.
  • Teaches clients self-advocacy skills.
  • Responds to client emergencies as needed.
  • Meets with clients regularly to offer one-on-one support and counseling.
  • Develops recovery plans, coping methods, and rehabilitation strategies with the client.
  • Arranges medical appointments, therapy sessions, support groups and other resources to aid the client.
  • Serves as a liaison with family members and medical professionals.
  • Generates recovery reviews and performance documents to track the rehabilitation process.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

A High School Diploma.

NOTE:   Additional years of Peer Recovery Experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for required education.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience performing Peer/Recovery or Peer Support services.

 

REQUIRED LICENSE(S).

A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is usually performed in an office setting but requires the employee to drive to different sites throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan.
