What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Support Specialist - Outpatient Clinics position at Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority?
Under the general supervision of the VP of Direct Clinical Services, the Peer Support Specialist – Outpatient clinics offers guidance and support to people who are struggling with substance abuse, psychological trauma, or mental health disorders.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Offers guidance and support to people who are struggling with substance abuse, psychological trauma, or mental health disorders.
- Functions as a role model to peers exhibiting competency in personal recovery.
- Serves as a consumer advocate providing client information and peer support for clients.
- Assists clients with finding resources for housing, employment and education while helping to develop a secure network of community support.
- Teaches clients self-advocacy skills.
- Responds to client emergencies as needed.
- Meets with clients regularly to offer one-on-one support and counseling.
- Develops recovery plans, coping methods, and rehabilitation strategies with the client.
- Arranges medical appointments, therapy sessions, support groups and other resources to aid the client.
- Serves as a liaison with family members and medical professionals.
- Generates recovery reviews and performance documents to track the rehabilitation process.
- Performs related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
A High School Diploma.
NOTE: Additional years of Peer Recovery Experience may be substituted on a year for year basis for required education.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience performing Peer/Recovery or Peer Support services.
REQUIRED LICENSE(S).
A valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a safe and acceptable driving record.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is usually performed in an office setting but requires the employee to drive to different sites throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan.
