Security Supervisor
Role
The DZS Security Supervisor is responsible for performing, assisting, and overseeing the following duties; training, writing reports, maintaining logs, performing inspections, investigations, dispatching, supervising all DZS Security officers, overseeing contract personnel and all other duties as assigned.
The DZS Security Supervisor will support both publicly and privately, the principles of the Detroit Zoological Society, while maintaining a professional manner when dealing with all constituencies, and always preserve a high level of confidentiality.

Authority and Accountability
The DZS Security Supervisor has the authority to carry out the job requirements and responsibilities and is accountable to the Security Manager. The DZS Security Supervisor will have the authority to refuse access to guests, visitors, contractors or any person seeking to gain entry without proper authorization or identification. The DZS Security Supervisor will be held accountable for following and enforcing the policies and procedures of the Detroit Zoological Society as well as enforcing the rules that govern the DZS Security Department. DZS Security Supervisor will be responsible for reporting violations to the Security Manager and Human Resources in a timely and accurate manner.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Facilitates new employee training and posts assignments to DZS Security Officers.
- Assists in the set-up and cleanup of special events.
- Provide a high level of professional customer service to guests and employees.
- Receives and dispersing information as needed.
- Completing guest incident reports and assisting with guest accident/incident investigations
- Responds to emergency situations and radio calls.
- Responds and administers first-aid treatment and CPR to anyone in need.
- Assists with safety inspections and reports any violations to the Health and Safety Coordinator.
- Reports any concerns or complaints to security management or HR Department.
- Supervises DZS Security Officers and contracted employees.
- Able to remain on-call and respond 24/7 to any emergency at the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center.
- Assist in hiring, onboarding, and training new officers.
- Write the schedule for officers provide accurate coverage for day to day zoo operations, special events, and satellite campuses.
- Maintain a high level of integrity and give accurate reports on situations.
- Assist in health screenings of staff, guests, and volunteers as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Security Director or Security Manager.
Working Conditions
The regular work schedule will include weekends, evenings, early mornings and holidays. Work is performed in an environment that has a high volume of traffic, requires the ability to deal with stressful and sometimes abusive situations. The DZS Security Supervisor will be required to work in rain, snow and extremely hot and cold temperatures.
Physical Requirements
The DZS Security Supervisor will be required to stand and sit for extended periods of time; must be able to multi task. A high degree of writing will be required and exposure to the elements. The supervisor should be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds. Bending, squatting, walking and running will be required. The supervisor will be required to pass and entry level drug screen and may be subjected to periodic drug tests.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Minimum
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Two years of supervisory experience or least three years of experience working in the security, loss prevention or crowd control environments.
- Two years of customer service experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees and guests, both orally and in writing.
- Must be a team player and support co-workers and supervisors.
- Cooperative, professional demeanor.
- Experience using the Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to create thorough guest incident reports.
- Ability to maintain a professional manner and always preserve a high level of confidentiality.
- Able to work varied hours and extended shifts.
Preferred
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Supervisor or management experience in the security field.
- Previous experience working in a cultural institution.
