The Buyer assists Center Store Director and helps with all aspects of procurement for Detwilers Center Store Departments. This position selects products, negotiates cost, orders, verifies cost and authorizes payment for merchandise according to Detwiler's standards. The Buyer analyzes past buying trends, sales, pricing, and quality of merchandise to assist Director in determining weekly promotions and retail pricing. Buyer will stay informed on trends and any occurrences that affect market conditions for all items and / or categories under their responsibility. Buyer is responsible for logistics planning for all their incoming orders. Buyer assists in preparing and executing approved planograms and manages the categories under their responsibility.

Essential Functions

  • Help outline and follow Detwiler's standards for all products carried in the department and assure that all vendor products meet those standards on quality and price.
  • Develop and maintain strong vendor relationships. Negotiate with strategic vendor partners to ensure correct pricing and procurement of Farm Market style center store items.
  • Be proactive in pursuing local and new items that can provide added excitement and profits.
  • Oversee ordering and warehouse inventory for all items that are maintained at the warehouse for delivery to stores as needed.
  • Respond to vendor / customer issues on a timely basis.
  • Manage specific categories given to you by the Director.
  • Support and act as a liaison between Detwiler's stores and vendors to assure quality products and department standards are being delivered.
  • Ensure that all Federal, State, and company regulations and standards for product freshness, safety, refrigeration, and sanitation are met.
  • Willing to travel multiple times a year to scout out products or attend trade shows.

Requirements

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Previous buying / negotiating experience required, minimum of three (3) years of departmental experience, with experience as Merchandiser or Manager preferred.
  • Requires strategic and financial planning skills.
  • Ability to preserve confidentiality of information, communicate with all levels of management and work within strict time frames and resolute deadlines.
  • High proficiency with Microsoft Office™ is essential.
