JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary
The Paralegal performs a variety of clerical and administrative duties related to the general practice of law by assisting attorneys in a supportive role. The Paralegal will bill 1,600 per year.
Essential Functions
Work under the general supervision of the attorneys, receiving both oral and written instructions.
Prepare, process, and proofread legal documents. This generally involves the use of computers and appropriate software.
Mail, fax, copy, and/or arrange for delivery of documents to clients, witnesses, opposing counsel and court officials.
Maintain filing systems, control records and indexes using moderate independent judgment.
Coordinate and participate in document production.
Obtain information using the research systems available to Deutsch Kerrigan.
Communicate with clients, court personnel, experts, attorneys and others via telephone, email, in person and in writing, obtaining and giving information as directed.
May be required to maintain supervisor(s) calendar electronically and/or manually by scheduling appointments and critical dates and keeping supervisor posted of same.
Assist with trial preparation including preparation of trial books, exhibits, etc.
Maintain client files by filing and retrieving materials as required.
Provide callers with information as authorized by attorney.
Experience in filing electronically with the courts.
Docket deadlines and coordinate with others in the department on related matters.
Support attorneys during litigation by drafting pleadings, locating case law, conducting discovery, preparing exhibits and corresponding with experts and other witnesses.
Responsible for entering and finalizing time to meet specified billing guidelines (minimum of 1,600 hours per calendar year).
Attend work regularly and in a timely manner.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Preferred Education and Experience
Paralegal Certificate
College degree or JD (alternative legal position in law firm).
A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a paralegal in a position involving exercising independent judgment and billing.
Must bill at least 135 hours a month.
Ability to type 65 wpm – excellent spelling, punctuation and grammar required and knowledge of legal terminology; may be required to know real estate closing procedures and terminology.
Proficient in the use of computers and Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Power Point and Microsoft Outlook.
Excellent people skills.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle and/or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop; kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Additionally, this position requires sitting for long periods of time while operating a computer. At times, the employee is required to work in excess of the normal work schedule and on evenings and weekends, particularly during trial preparation. Employees in this position must be mobile and have the ability to type with both hands.
