Job Summary:
A Phlebotomist is a trained healthcare professional responsible for drawing blood from patients for various medical purposes, including laboratory tests, blood donations, or transfusions. No license is required for this role, but prior experience in blood draws is essential. Certifications such as NHA or ASCP would be helpful but not mandatory.
Key Responsibilities:
Blood Collection:
- Draw blood from patients for lab tests, blood donations, or research.
- Prepare patients by explaining procedures, answering questions, and providing reassurance to calm anxious individuals.
- Select appropriate veins and apply sterile techniques for blood collection, ensuring minimal discomfort for patients.
- Label and organize blood samples properly for transportation to labs.
Patient Care and Communication:
- Provide excellent care by reassuring and ensuring the safety and comfort of patients before, during, and after blood collection.
- Collect relevant patient information, such as medical history and medications.
- Follow infection control protocols and standard precautions to prevent contamination.
Specimen Handling:
- Ensure all blood samples are labeled, stored, and transported according to regulatory and safety guidelines.
- Prepare specimens for analysis or transfusions.
- Monitor and track lab results for accuracy.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Maintain and clean phlebotomy equipment and supplies.
- Ensure safety standards are met when using needles, tubes, and other equipment.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or deficiencies to the appropriate supervisor.
Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of blood collection procedures and patient interactions.
- Adhere to healthcare regulations, including HIPAA (patient confidentiality), OSHA (safety), and other relevant standards.
Team Collaboration:
- Work with nurses, doctors, and laboratory technicians to ensure smooth patient care.
- Assist in managing phlebotomy inventory, including ordering necessary supplies.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience: Prior experience in blood draws is essential.
- Certifications:
- No license required, but certifications such as NHA (National Healthcareer Association) or ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) would be helpful.
- Skills:
