Job Overview

Works as a trainee in classroom and in-service activities in the Fire Service field. Under immediate supervision, participates in classroom instruction and field training in basic fire fighting techniques and practices. Instruction also includes emergency medical services. Work is reviewed by written and practical examinations, and by observation for suitability for Fire Service work. Knows and gains understanding of the Airport’s Safety and Security regulations and takes proactive measures (see something, say something) to immediately report safety and security violations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends recruit training courses providing classroom and field instruction in basic fire procedures, techniques and skills.

  • Attends lectures, practical demonstrations and participates in courses covering areas such as fire service rules, regulations and procedures, and techniques of setting ladders, laying lines, extinguishing fires, and use of respiratory equipment.

  • Attends formal academy training for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.

  • Assists the Environmental Affairs Department in performing field observations of Airport activities with respect to potential environmental issues and notifies the Environmental Affairs Department of any observations that may have environmental impact.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Fire Chief.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age at date of application.

  • Citizen of the United States of America.

  • Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent.

  • Possession of a valid Class C driver's license or equivalent from another state.

  • Must have one of the following:

  • Possession of a Texas Commission on Fire Protection Certification as a basic structural firefighter and Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) Certification as an EMT (NREMT), or

  • TDSHS Paramedic Certification, or

  • 24 college hours from accredited college, or

  • 2 years full-time continuous Active-Duty Military service with honorable discharge, or

  • 2 years cumulative Active-Duty service with Military Reserves, National or Coast Guard with honorable discharge

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Skill in use of assigned equipment.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions quickly and accurately.

  • Ability to meet physical requirements prescribed by the Department of Public Safety Department.

  • Ability to pass a written examination.

  • Ability to pass the Physical Ability Test (PAT).

  • Ability to pass a psychological examination.

  • Ability to pass a truth verification examination and/or polygraph.

  • Ability to pass a background investigation which includes criminal and driving records checks.

  • Ability to pass a medical physical examination and drug test.

  • Ability to complete acceptable standards in classroom and field training within acceptable time or trial limits established in the department's training procedures.

  • Ability to operate a personal computer.

  • Ability to complete and successfully pass training in fire fighting principals, practices, procedures, methods and equipment for aircraft fire/rescue, structural fires and emergency medical technology.

  • Ability to acquire knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in assigned area.

  • Ability to evaluate immediate life-threatening situations and make quick decisions for stabilization of an incident.

  • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to changing conditions, situations and pressures.

  • Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights greater than ten (10) feet, in extreme temperatures and weather conditions, and for long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration.

  • Ability to perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 55 pounds or more sometimes for long distances.

  • Ability to perform work while lifting arms above shoulder level.

  • Ability to use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing.

  • Ability to interact cooperatively and harmoniously with personnel in his/her assigned station, Department of Public Safety, other Airport departments, and the public.

  • Ability to attend continuing education classes to assure minimal standards are met as outlined by the Texas Fire Commission and the Texas Department of State Health Services.

  • Ability to read, write and speak English in a manner which is understandable/discernable to others in the current work force.

  • Ability to complete written reports accurately.

  • Ability to work various shifts.

  • Ability to conform to Department standards.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

  • Must obtain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) Airport Identification/Access Badge (badge) in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements in Chapter 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1500 et al., and DFW Airport’s Airport Security Program within thirty (30) days from date of employment and maintain qualification for a SIDA badge upon each badge renewal.

  • This is a designated safety sensitive position as defined in DFW Airport’s Drug and Alcohol Administrative Policy and Procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass a drug test prior to employment and to submit to drug screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety sensitive position.

  • Possession of, or the ability to complete the requirements for a Texas State certification in basic structural fire fighting and aircraft rescue fire fighting as prescribed by the Texas Fire Commission.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an FBI Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance.

DESIRABLE:

  • Possession of, or ability to complete the requirements for a Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) certification Paramedic certification.

EFFORTS:

  • Works in an office environment and in the field.

  • May work around fire, liquid fuels and hazardous chemicals.

  • Works in confined spaces.

  • Works in awkward positions including with arms above shoulder level.

  • Works at heights greater than ten (10) feet.

  • Works in extreme temperatures and weather conditions.

  • Frequently lifts up to 55 pounds, occasionally lifts up to 75 pounds.

  • Pushes and pulls up to 55 pounds.

  • Climbs ladders.

  • Uses color perception in a variety of situations.

  • Uses computer monitors and keyboarding devices.

  • Communicates by telephone, radio, and computer, in writing and in person.

  • Drives to locations on and off Airport property.
